At Waipori on the 19th inst. Mr A. R. Edmonds, late manager of the Jutland Flat dredge, was presented with a handsome gold watch prior to his departure for the West Coast to enter into the service of the Nelson Oresk Dredging Company. Mrs M'Laren, wife of a miner living at Granity, West Coast, and two children had a- very narrow escape from being roasted in their beds recently. Mrs M'Laren left "a candle burning on a table when she retired, and woke up later on to find the curtain and bedclothes on fire. She rushed outside with the baby, and only remembered about the other child when she heard his cries. Wrap- - ping a wet blanket round her head she rushed into the burning building and rescued him, though her own clothes were enveloped in flames, which were extinguished with difficulty. The escape seems to have been a most miraculous one. —News.
