OTAGO GOLF CLUB.
The annual general meeting of the Otago Golf Club was held on Friday evening, the Ist inst v at the Provincial Hotel. There was a very large attendance, some 50 members being present. Dr Brown (the captain) occupied the chair. The following report for the season 18991900 was presented to tha meeting and adopted : — • In presenting the eighth annual report the coirniittee have pleasure in congratulating members on the continued success of the club. Our membership at present consists of 100 , members. During the year 19 committee meetings were held, at which a large s mount of business came up for transaction. In December, 1899, the then captain of the club (Mr J. JR. Scott) found it necessary to resign his position. Your committee induced Dr Brown, after considerable pressure, to fill the vacant office until the end of the year (in terms of the rules . of the club), and it is felt that the thanks of the club are due to Dr Brown for acting as captain. The New Zealand Aniateiir Cb.ampionsb.ir> •was played for twice during the past year, in Wellington during August, 1899, and in Dunedin in May, 1900. On both occasions the championship was deservedly won by MiArthur Duncan, of Wellington. In May, 1900, . the runner-up was an old member of the Otago Golf Clvb — Mr Hugh Macneil. The next championship will be held in Auckland, probably in September, 1901, and the committee trust that the Otago Golf Club will be well represented. The second competition foi the Hanrner Chal- -- lenge Shield took place in Dunedin in October, 1899, when, after a close contest, the Christchurch Golf Club succeeded in retaining the .tiophy. The next match will be played in Christchurch, probably in August next, when it is to be hoped the Challenge Shield will be won for Otago. The Club Championship attracted the large Slumber of 32 entries. Mr G. H. MacEwan proved tlie winner, and Mr W. C. MacGregor was the runner-up. The Bruntfield Gold Medal was played for tin St. Andrew's Day, as usual, when Mi Adam Scott was the winner. The St. Andrew's Cross was played for month Toy month as usual, and won twice by Mr Adam Scott and Mr MacEwan.and once each by Messrs '&. Kobeits, A. H. Fisher, H. Price, T. Gilray, ■R. T. Wheeler, jun., C. Turnbull, and Dr Burl. An approaching and putting competition was $$& this year for ibe fljrat time, md proved a
successful novelty. It was won by Mr W. C. MacGregor.
Members will observe by analysing the balance sheet that we start the New !fear by a deficit of JE4 3s 9d. It must not be foigotten, however, that we commenced the present year with a deficit of £31 0s 7d, and during the past 12 months a very large sum (about £120) has been expended m permanent improvements on the links, vhich are now in much better oiclsr than any preceding year. The statement of liabilities and assets shews a credit of £156 8s 7d. The thanks of the club are due ta Messrs Wilson Bros, for keeping cattle oif the links during the Championship meeting. We would suggest to -the incoming committee that arrangements be made with the Ladies' Club for bi-monthly mixed foursomes. The scarcits' of caddies on other days than Saturdays is to be regretted, but probably accounted for by the piosperity of the city, boys easily finding employment at good v. ages. As Messrs M'Millan have given up the lease of the links, some arrangements with the Balmacev/an Paik Company will be necessary for reletting the grazing, the commitl.ee are of Ihe opinion that effoits should he made to secuie the grazing of sheep in preference to cows. The committee again wish to record their appreciation of the services rendered by Mr and Mrs Annan. Your committee regrets thai Mr R. T. Wheeler, jun., after occupying the onerous post of secretary and treasurer for four years, now finds it necessary to retire. The members of the committee feel that a debt of gratitude is due by the club to Mr Wheeler for his able services to the club during a difficult and momentous period of its history. The committee elected for the ensuing year were: Mr J. E. Hosking (captain), Dr Bnrt (secretary and treasurer). Dr Brown and Messr? G. H. MaeEvran. George Roberts, H. D. Stronach, and A. Tapper. On Saturday afternoon the St. Andrew's cross competition took place. There were 32 entries'. A strong cold wind interfered with the making of any record score, and accounts for the fact that only 11 cards were handed in. Mr A. H. Fisher* was the winner with a net score of 90 (100—10 handicap), Mr H. D. Stronach being runner-up with a net return of 95 (101 — 6 handicap). The following were the scores handed in: — Mr A. 11. Fisher . . . . 100 less 10 — 90 Mr H. D. Stronach .-. 101 less 6 — 95 Mr A. Todd .. .. 108 less 10 — 98 Mr J. A. Cook .. .. 112 less 14 — 98 Mr T. Gilray 103 less 4—99 Mr A.
