Urquhart, Palmerston. The claims of the union were -thus scheduled : — A day's -work shall consist of eight hours* i A half-holiday shall be observed from' -12,-, o'clock noon on Saturdays. All work done exceeding eight hours in any 24 hours shall be e'eemed. to be overtime, and shall be paid for as f ollows : — j .Time and a-quarter shall be paid' for the v first two hours ; time and a-half for the second * two hours; after the second two hours, double time shall be paid. All work done on Sundays and on holidays shall be paid for at the rate of double tune. The foJ] owing days shall hsy obseived as holidays . — New Year's Day and January 2, Good Friday, Easter Monday, the Sovereign's Birthday, Labour Day, and Cnrisi>mas Pay. Ths number of ,boys or apprentices employed in any flotiimill shall, not exceed- one to four, or fraction of the first four men. The numbeiof boys or apprentices emr>loyed'in any oatmeal mill shall not exceed two to one man employed in the department. Alb boys 'or apprentices " shall serve for a term of five years. That members of the union shall ba employed in preference to non-members — provided there arfe members of the union who are equally qualified with non-members to perform the ; partcmlar work required to be done, and are . ready and willing to imdertake it. Formal evidence was given a? .to the decision of the union at a meeting of members, duly called, to file the order of reference. | Mr Arnold said that since the parties had arrived in Dunedin a semi-conference had been held, and both bides were of opinion that if they could meet together in conference,, the board bains- present, it would be pos£ibl9 in the course of the day to come to an agree- . ment that vvould be satisfactory to all parties. ' I The Chairman said he was very glad to hear ! that: they always encouraged conferences in.' every way they could. ■ Mr Arnold said if the board was agreeable to a conference being held, the board, of course, being present, &o as to, facilitate the^ ' business, then it would be unnecessary for lrinv 1 at that time to deliver an address making ! public grievances in the trade which would 'be of no interest to the public if an agreement could be arrived at. The parties concerned and the board then held a conference, from which the public wers exuded.
