IT WAS- NOT THE CLIMATE,

''I ha-> c been well as to my general health" — so wrote the late Dr 0. W. .holmes a short time before his death — "'but have had a good deal of asthma. The climate ii cold and rough, but I ha\e found much that is delightful about iay residence here in Boston (America). Perhaps, after all, the fault is not so much in latitude 4-2 as in ag-e 82."

That wp&ir. Tho wise thinker ddd not deceive himseii. He knew that ii is the wasting intue!e& thai complain of the steepness of the hills and the thinning blood that fancies the winters are colder than they u&ed to be.

And it was not because Mrd Amy isarvey had lost interest in her domestic aft'airs that she was led to fay everything was a trouble and a burden. No ;it was because she had lose Le/ eirengch. Whether a duty is a, burdon or net depends on the back which has to cany it. Ah, dear mo, how constantly experience enforces that lesson upon ue. Thsn v, hat keen concern wo feel in the answer to the question : What will strengthen the quivering limbs? What will restore the vigour of the mind?

"All my life." sayp Mrs Harvey, "I have suffered off and on from indigestion and weakness. " I felt low and languid, with a disagreeable sinking sensation after talcing my meals. I had no energy ; evciything was a tequbls and a bttedex\ As soon a? 1 I'sd partaken of food, no matter how light, I felt, a fulness and a gnawing pain at my chest, as if something were tearing it.

''I also suffered much from nervous headache, and was often dizzy. My breathing was short, and if I exerted myself I was quite out of breath. As time went on I got extremely weak and could not attend to my work.

"I saw doctor after doctor, aucl was told by them that my ailment was owing to my food not digesting." [Tho doctors were right. That was the trouble, and the only one. Yet instead of being a comparative trifle, as many shallow persons say, it is the most serious of all diseases. Of cotirse some of her food digested more or less fully ; otherwise she could not have lived a fortnight. But the nourishment was never enough for the wants of the body. Hence the nervous headaches, the asthma, the pinking sensation, the dizziness, the gnawing pain, and the disabling weakness The body under these conditions is like a house abandoned to dscay. All goes to rack and ruin.]

"1 took the doctors' medicines," continues this lady'p plain account, "but ray case was an obstinate one, and none of them seemed of any avail. "In May, 1891. a neighbour told me of the benefit she had derived from Mother Seigel's Syrup. "I p,'ot a bottle from Messrs W. Fo>: and Sons, chemists, Befchnal Green, and when 1 had taken iL two days J felt much relief. I "Bontinued taking it, and could eat and enjoy ray food without having pain. T now gained strength and PEIT beighteb tiias 1 HAD EVEE DONE IX lIV LIFE.

"Since than I have kept well, taking a dose or two of Mother Seigel's Syrup when I need it;' and I find--it always puts me right. You can publish this statement if you think fit. (Signed) (Mrs) Amy Harvey, 19 'J' Block, Dufferin street, Bunhill Row, London, June 26th, 1895."

"In March. 1894-," writes another, "I had a severe attack of influenza which 'eft me extremely weak. I was troubled with indigestion and want of appetite. Having read of the wonderful cures mads by Mother Seiqel's Syrup I decided to try it. I got a bottle from Mr Wm, Tly. Jones, the chemist in Caledonian road. In two days I felt great benefit. I could eat, and food agreed with me, causing 110 pain. Ix A FEW DATS I WAS COMPLETELY CT7KSD, AND WELL AS EVER. "Since that time I have kept Mother Seigel's Syrup in the house as a family medicine, and it always relieves when any of us suffer from indigestion, etc. I have pleasure in making this statement, and you can publish it if you wish. (Signed) Geo. H. Barker, 41- Montpelier road, Kentish Town, London, N.W., Oune 9th, 1896." These excellent letters call for no explanation. Their sincerity and truth is plain on the surface. And when we remember that what the writer* affirm of Mother Seigel's Syrup is also declared by thousands of others, the value of this remedy is established beyond question.

A movement is on foot (saye the Western Star) to tender Mr M. Gilfadder, M.H.R., a banquet.

News from Samoa slates that recently ai gathering of Samoan chiefs look place in the private residence of the Governor of Mulinuu. It was a kind of farewell fono for the chiefs entrusted by the Governor to assist him in the establishment of a native selfgovernment. Tho Governor advised them to be quiet and peaceful and not to molest people to whom they were still not altogether friendly. The attitude of the chiefs was satisfactory and assurances were frequently given that tho time of disturbances had passed over altogether.
