LATE MINING. COMMERCIAL.

(Continued from page 22.)

NOTES PROM CLYDE. May 21. — Mr iutehie, the contractor for tha construction of -the pontoons of the Cairnmuir, Monte Christo, and lielly and- Casey dredges, has made a start at the work, and intends pushing it on to completion with all possible haste. The "Vincent dredge had to stop work on Saturday afternoon, owing to some slight mishap occurring to the machinery. The pontoons of the Halfway House dreclgc are now ready for, the'inachinery. The demise of the late Warden Dalgliesh severs yet another cf the few remaining links that connect goldfields life of the present day with the more eventful life of the golden sixties. At the time of the escort robbery here ih.e late gentleman held the position of inspector _of police at Clyde, which position 'he resigned owing to troubles cropping up in connection with the gold robbery. For some years after this Mr Dalgleish entered into a partnership with some friends, with whom he ventured in a publishing concern in the North Island. ' When failure of this business came about, the late Mr Dalgleish secured an appointment as receiver 'of gold revenue and clerk of the - court at Cromwell, which position he maintained until his appointment to the bench some eight years ago. As a friend, the late gentleman excelled in his sincerity, and he always enjoyed the time spent in chatting with identities of the early goldfields days. He could relate reminiscences of life in the sixties in a most entertaining manner, those recollections invariably covering events peculiarly characteristic of the diggers' life upon a new goldfield in a young country. Since his appointment as S.M. and Warden, the late Mr Dalgleish has been resident at Naseby, which circuit "is now to be taken over by Mr M'Ennis, who comes from the West Coast. The Unity dredge is working steadily. ' The machinery of the New Alexandra dredge appears to give no end of trouble. The stoppages are not infrequent at all events. The work of laying down the pipe line for the ' Earnscleugh No. 3 Electric Power Company is being pioreeded with, pipes having been delivered recently, which allows the men to conthnie work.
