RIVERS COMMISSION. (From Our Special Reporter.)

QOLAC BAY, May 2.

The Rivers Commission inspected the Waiau River and its tributaries yesterday, and in the evening held a sitting at the Masonic Hotel, Orepuki. Objection was made to the proclamation of the Hollyburn tributary of the Waiau by Janet M'Quillan, owner of a section of over 200 acres along the Hollyburn. Evidence was given by Henry M'Quillan, sen., Henry M'Quillan, jun. , who estimated the damage that -would be, sustained by the pollution of the stream through mining operations at £2500. Thomas Johnston, secretary of the Miners' Association at Orepuki, made a representation on oath as to the necessity for providing an outlet for prospective mining works at Kenny's Creek, a short distance from the Orepuki township. To-day the commission visited Round Hill.

INVERCARGILL, May 3.

Yesterday the members of the Rivers Commission proceeded via Colac to Round Hill, and made a thorough inspection of the Ourawera Stieam and the workings along it. A meeting was held in the afternoon at the Colac Hotel, but no person attended to make any representation in regard to the proclamation of the stream. No formal objection had been made or compensation claimed Avhen notice of the intention to proclaim was advextised some considerable time ago. The next watercourse to be dealt with is the Waikaka, at Gore, where it is expected the commission will &it for some time.

To-day the members of the Rivers Commission inspeoLed the Titipua Stream, having a hard drive of 40 miles through rain and slush. They arrived in the evening at Gore, where excellent provision was made for them at the 'Southland Hotel. To-morrow the commission inspects portion of the Waikaka Stream.

May 7.

The members of the Rivers Commission have occupied three days in inspecting the land along the Waikaka and Mataura Rivers, and to-morrow evidence will be taken for and against the proclamation of the Waikaka as a sludge channel. There are 58 claimants ior compensation in the event of the Waikaka being declared a sludge channel. *

The Masterton Borough overdraft is now £1360 8s lid.
