HIGH SCHOOLS BOARD OF GOVERNORS.
The ordinary meeting of the Board of Governors of the High Schools was held on Monday ; present — Dr Brown (chairman), Mr G. G. Russell, Mr J. R. Sinclair, Mr J. J. Ramsay, the Rev. W. Hewitson, and Dr Shand. j The bank book showed a credit balance of £691 8s 4d. Miss M. Mowat wrote applying for the use of the Girls' High School Gymnasium for pri- ! vate gymnastic classes. — The application was ' declined. j Mrs M. Anderson, lessee of section 25, j block V, Mokoreta, applied for a* reduction of rent. — The application was declined. A circular was received from the South Canterbury Education Board, asking the cooperation of the High Schools Board in an endeavour to induce the University Senate of New Zealand to rescind a regulation to abolish the holding of the matriculation examination in the smaller centres throughout the colonj'. — It was resolved to reply that the board has not heard that the senate entertains any such proposal. A letter was read from -the rector of the Boys' High School, enclosing the Hon. A. Lea Smith's cheque for £15, as this year's in-» stalment of the Lee Smith Mining Scholarship, and recommending that the scholarship be awarded to James Allan Thomson. — The scholarship was awarded accordingly. One of the latest curios received from the front is "a fragment of the biscuit used by the New Zealand contingent during their march to the relief of Kimberley." The memento is in the possession of a Palmerston North resident.
