A circular was received from the South Canterbury Education Board, asking the cooperation of the High Schools Board in an endeavour to induce the University Senate of New Zealand to rescind a regulation to abolish the holding of the matriculation examination in the smaller centres throughout the colonj'. — It was resolved to reply that the board has not heard that the senate entertains any such proposal. A letter was read from -the rector of the Boys' High School, enclosing the Hon. A. Lea Smith's cheque for £15, as this year's in-» stalment of the Lee Smith Mining Scholarship, and recommending that the scholarship be awarded to James Allan Thomson. — The scholarship was awarded accordingly.
