RAILWAY RETURNS. WELLINGTON, May 3.

The railway returns for the year shoTT a most satisfactory result. The total revenue was £1,623,890, against £1,469,665 for the previous year. The expenditure was £1,052,357, against £929,737. The net receipts were therefore £571,533, giving a percentage of £3 8s against £3 5s lOd. The revenue for the North Island lines was £600, #26, and for the South Island £1 ,023,06 a. There are now 2104- miles open, against 2090 in 1899. The total cosL is put down at £16,004,076, besides £786,891 for unopened lines. The traffic shows an increase in every class of goods except " chaff, lime," etcT -The number of passengers was increased by 512,731.

The railway returns for the four weeks ended on March 31 show that the leceipts were £143,191 '6s 6d and the expenditure £33,278 8s lid.
