FEEDING AND MANAGEMENT OF AUSTRALIAN INFANTS. By Phillip E. Muskeit. Empson and Son.
This fifth edition of Dr Mti&kett's useful and practical book i§, enlarged and improved in every respect. The arrangement of the contents is excellent, and the information, suggestions, and advice grouped under the different headings most exhaustive. Beginning with the birth of the mfaut, its diet in health and disease, ike health and personal attention of the mother, the clothing and care of children from infancy through childhood, and, indeed, all that in any degree pertains to their health, and therefore their happiness' — lifelong happiness — is here treated.
That such a manual is sorely needed, and that it should be studied and acted upon by all classes of the communities of 'New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, and South Australia, is amply demonstrated bj r some facts alluded to in the preface. Thus
from tables given it ■would' appear that the rate of infant mortality among the four Australian capitals is as shocking as it i& unjustifiable, since in 15 years — viz., from 1884 to 1898 inclusive, tliere were 203,327 deaths of infants under tvo years of age ; or, in other words, the daily loss of infants readied the number of 37 — .ai appalling drain on the population, especially since one-half could ba prevented. Dr Mnskett's book is ;i most practical one, and should be of real service in combatting the waste of iniaut life which lie deplores.
