MEMBERS OF HEE CREW REACH AUCKLAND.
AUCKLAND, May 5,
The Ovalau, from Tahiti, brings four of the crew of the Chilian ship Hindustan, which was burnt in mid-ocean oh March 8..- When the vessel was a month oufc 'from San Francisco to Valparaiso with timber, a fire broke out in the cargo under the donkey engine, which is believed to have been' caused by overheating through the constant use ox the donkey engine to pump the vessel, which leaked rather badly. The crew fought the flames for six hours, but the fire got the upper hand and they had to abandon the ves&el. Two •boats were provisioned, and manned — nine in one boat and 13 in the other, — and a course shaped for the Marquesas, about 1000 miles westward. Constant calms delayed the boats, but the Marquesas were eventually reached after 11 days without mishap. From there the Southern Cross took the crew to Tahiti, where the chief officer, tlie carpenter, and two seamen came on to Auckland, the res>t> l'emaining in order to return to San Francisco.
