Three grain graders have been appointed by the- Government for the ports ot Lyttelton, Port Chalmers, and the Bluff. " The cost is -to be borne by shippers. The Government has accepted the ?er,vices of the Highland Rifle Company here, •but- declined two others.
.A prisoner named Teece, who was being taken to gaol on the 2nd handcuffed to another prisoner, slipped his bonds, and -as soon as the cab stopped bolted. He was not recaptured, although there were two constables in attendance.
The only item in the revenue for last year which shows a decrease is temtprial (£11,571). Among the increases 'are': Lcind and income tax, £8923 ; beer duty, £4079; marine, £2330; miscellaneous, £9491. The customs revenue shows increase in spirits of £29,199 ; tobacco, £12,852 ;* sugar, £11,237; ad valorem goods, £68,410; goods by weight, £10,898. * °
