RACING IN NEW ZEALAND.

WELLINGTON AUTUMN MEETING. First Dat — Wednesday, May 2.

Early this morning there was every proiniefl of fine ' weather for the opening clay of the Autumn meeting of the Wellington Racing Club,- bin about 11 o'clock rain came dowa in torrents. At that hour most people were on the course, and after a short discussion the stewards decided to race. It was for ■ tunate they did so, as the latter part of the clay was clear and bright. The course was A-ery holding, and the calculations of probable winners were upset to a conside: able - degree, -the favourites scoring in only t»-* events. The downfall of Advance in d.c Challenge Stakes was a great blow to lccaJ sports, but the favourite, though prominent for a short while, never appeared to relish the heavy going, and was badly beaten out of a place. On the other hand, Mr Stead's Formosnn. despite his penalties, 'galloped? through the mud in first-class style, and it i* doubtful whether on a dry day the result would not have been the same. With a limited attendance, speculation was not sq, rife as at the former Autumn meetings, yet ih.i machined, handled £8973. Kesults: —
