G-lasson liars resigned their positions on the S.CJ.C. com' inittee. — The first pickers of doubles on the Birthday and Tradesmen's Handicaps chose Fuhnen for the Birthday. — Grand Flaneur was as a yearling sold fofl 175gs to Mr J. Smith, then the Hon. W. A. Long's racing partner. — Dunedin backers went straight for St. Denis at Wellington on Friday, and raked the bookmakers fore and aft. — London Times characterises as "most peculiar" the transactions in connection with, the running of The Grafter in the City and ' Suburban Handicap last week. — The Hon. J. D. Ormond's Dreadnought— Maluri gelding, Condor, who won a couple oi races at the last meeting of the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club, fell dead recently. — George Smith has St. Hiko, Witchcraft, Bracken, and Off Chance in training for tha Birthday meeting, and tliey are all doing well. This reliable trainer has won 14 races already this season. — Lady Undy, winner of the two pony races on the first day of the Wellington Trotting Club's meeting, is by St. Andrew — Gabble, therefore sister to Jabber, winner of the Thompson Handicap. — Jpjs Onniaru Mail: We are in possession of reliable information that the stable threw in. foe a good wir. ou Vandyke in -the Welter at Timaiu, while he was allowed to run practically loose in the big race. -- Ti is said -that Sir Blundell Maple has decided to stait St. Nidio for the Derby, instead of reserving her for the Oaks. St. Kidia is a bnautiful iiliy, and it is unlucky for her owner tli.'L slia was not entered for the One Ihousanci. — Two very appiopriate names have been selected by T. Quinlivan, jun., for a couple of Mr Watts' youngsters. The Torpedo — Javeline filly will in future be known as Destroyer, and the colt foal by The Workman from ariety The Toiler. — Beautiful weather attracted a capital attendance to the Ashburton Trotting Club's Autumn meeting. The track, owing to recent rains, was very heavy. The totalisator investments amounted to £1013, -all tickets being issued at 10s each. —On the recent South Canterbury rneetmg the balance sheet shows an apparent loss of £13 odd; but Mr G-unn pointed out that half the members' subscriptions, amounting to £60, should really be credited to the meeting, and this would form a surplus. — In the Tradesmen's Handicap at Dunedin Mr Dowse makes Conqueror give Ben Failey 3lb. In the Grove Farm Handicap at Ashburton Mr Henry makes Ben Farley give Conqueror 51b. This is the advantage o£ having different handicappers. With one man doing all the handicaps one mistake would be -perpetuated all along the line. — The judges appointed by the president of the Racing Conference to consider the Wairarapa Jockey Club's appeal in connection with the disqualification of Lady Agnes last January have upheld the decision of the metropolitan club at Wellington, to the effect that the mare is entitled to the stakes for which the country club had disqualified her. — At a recent meeting of the S.CJ.C. committee it was suggested that race meetings should be held on Wednesdays and Thursdays, instead of Thursdays and Fridays, and a resolution was carried that the Spring meeting slioulcl be held on September 5 and 6, and the Autumn meeting on the Wednesday and ' Thursday in the week following the Christchurch Easter meeting. — Bristol is just now in such, great form that I would not put the Ashburton Flying pa3fc him, even with top weight of 9.4. Melita and Phryne are perhaps the ones he will have lo beat if lie starts. I pick Suzannah as the likeliest of the County Handicap lot, and other selections (from the original weights) are Lady Medallist for the Fairfield Handicap, Belligerent for the Novel, and Garmoran or Bristol for the Grove Farm Handicap. — After the principal race at the Ashbuiton Trots a protest was entered against Hard Case on the ground that his rider weighed in overweight without having previously made a declaration to that efiect, but it being 3hown that the rider "if the second horse was also overweight, it v?.is withdrawn. The owner of the third horse also entered a protest against the first raid second horses on similar giounds, but when J5 -s/as discovered that the rider of Wenlock ■-,*.& al&o over-weight, the objection was also ■w.tkdra vn.
