OTAGO AGRICULTURAL AND PASTROAL SOCIETY.
A special meeting of the committee was held in. the Agricultural Hall Board Eoom on Saturday morning, and attended by Messrs A. C. Stronach (president, in the chair), Thoa. Brydone, A. C. Begg, H. V. Fulton, W. Souter, A. Johnson, George Eoberts, W. H. Taggart, A. Douglas, C. S Eeid, W. Patrick, Eobt. Campbell, John Lethbridge, H. M. Driver, G-. H. Gilroy, John Wright, S. D. Andrew. Apologies were received from Messrs John Angus, Jap. Gow, W. Charters, P. Pattullo, and Jas. Hazletfc..
Mr John D. Ritchie (secretary Agricultural department) wrote offering to exhibit some 40 varieties of wheat mostly new to this colony, and a number of varieties of potatoes. — The secretary was instructed to acknowledge the letter, and advise Mr Ritchie that the committee would afford his department every facility for the exhibition of these.
The Secretory of the JSV.v Zealand Agricultural Conference wrote notifying that the conference would be held in Wellington on the 10th June. — Mr John Eoberts and Mr Thos. Brydone were unanimously proposed as delegates to represent this society. Mr J. B. MacEwan wrote m reference to the committee erecting shafting for the use of exhibstors at the Winter Show.— lt was decided to leave the matter in the hands of the executive, and to ascertain the cost, and report as to the advisability of the most suitable place to erect shafting.
Mr S. S. Mcrrett wrote advising that he purposed exhibiting fat stock at the Winter Show, and in consequence could not accept the position of judge.
The Manager of the Fanners' Co-operative Associat'on wrote in reference to its occupying a portion of the building until its new pieraise^ were ejected, and al«o that the Teviot Fruitgrowers' Company desiied to obtain for next seasoA the same poition ot the building as now utilised by them. — It was decided to leave the /natter in the hands of the executive to deal with, with a recommendation that the necessary accommodation be granted to the Teviot Fruitgrowers' Association if possible.
Mr Dalziel wrote on behalf of the Otago and Southland Farmers' Union, advising that a conference of delegates -would be held m Duncdm on the 24th and 25th May for the purpose of discussing matters regarding the agricultural interests of the two piovinccs, and requesting to send delegates to represent the society. It was decided to grant the union the use of the Board Room for such meetings, provided that the dates do not iiiteifere with meetings already arranged, and the question of the appointment of delegates was held over. -The Secretaiy of the National Association wrote- asking for a room for the purpose of holding the aunual meeting, ?nd discussing matters m connection with the dairy industry. — The secretary was instructed to grant the association the necessary accommodation.
The secretary was instructed to comrmmicate with, the district railway traffic manager asking him to giant excursion fares for. the forthcoming Winter Show similar to last year. Mr J. A. Euddick (Dairy Commissioner) wrote
notifying that it was the intention to make the daily conference this year as practical as possible, and would be glad if the committee^ would arrange for suitable accommodation. lie also submitted the following programme: — " Report of Judges on Dairy Produce and Cheese-mak-ing," by J. A. Euddick; "Supervision of MilkSupplied Factories," by D. J. M'Gowan; " Fermentation Starter and Cheese and Butter-mak-ing," by J. A. Kinsella ; ' ' The Dairy Industry of New Zeala.ncT," by J. A. iiuddick; "Examination and Discussion on Fishy Butter," by Messrs J. T. Lamg, A. A. Thornton, and James Sawers, and several other matters affecting the dairy industry. The secretory was instructed lo make all necessaiy arrangements, and give •die Dany Comrn.ssioiiei- every facility to cai'iy out the piogramme submitted.
The annual general meeting -was' fixed for Fiiday, May 25, and the closing of nominations for membeis of committee for Saturday next.
The Executive reported that all ariaiigemeiita had been completed ha connection with the purchase of the annexe buildings, and that a eorttract had been entered into for the erection of two offices, which had been already leased.
A number of gentlemen -\\rote notifying their acceptance oi the office of judges at the forthooniiKg Winter Show, arid it was decided to leave the appointments of class ste'vaids and subcommittees, to deal vath matters in connection with the foithcommg show m the hands of the executive.
All the retiring members of committee were duly nommpted for re-election. Mr Thos. Brydone proposed — " That Mr H. V. Fulton be nominated for the position of president," and m doing so pointed out that Mr Fulton hid always taken a veiy keen interest in all matters affecting the society. The motion was seconded by Mr Lethbridge. and carried unanimously. Mr IL V. Fulton proposed, and Mr & . H. Gilroy seconded the nomination of Mr John C. Gov.-, of Palnierston. as a member Oi the committee. As the nominations received &cc in excess of tlia number lequired, a balloi will be laken at the annual general meeting.
