The steam barque Southern Cross, with the returning Antarctic Expedition under Mr Borchgrevink, reached Stewart Island on April 1. The result of the expedition is said to be tlie location of the south magnetic pole. The Southern Cross expedition was organised by Sir George "N'ewnes. The vessel left London on August 22, 1898, with Mr Borchgrevjnk in command of the expedition, while Captain Karl Jensen commanded the Southern Cross. The vessel, after-" cailling at Hobart and refitting, took her departure for the Antarctic Circle on December 17, 1898. Eight days later she reached ice Thence she experienced considerable diffi culty in struggling through the ice. She had to make her way for a distance of 400 or 500 miles. Victoria Land was reached 12 days after leaving Hobart.
