BROAD BAY.
|" April 30. — "Winter has arrived several day 3 j before time-table date. We had cold rain and hail on Friday, and a touch of frost on Saturday morning. The season has its usuaf effect on the milk supply, and the Portobello creameries are now working on alternate days only.
Local Bodies Elections. — Koad Board and school committee elections are now very tame affairs. Time was when a school committee election brought out every householder in Jhe district, and the winning party would have a lively " jollification afterwards; and a Eoad Board election had more interest than for the House of Eepresentatives. Saturday last was the day for nominating candidates for the Road Board, when Mr John Bacon 'was re-elected, upopposed for this sub-division, and Mr Eoberfc Milne similarly honoured for North-east Harbour. Portobello has three candidates (two required) — Messrs North, W. Geary, jun., and A. Dick. The poll takes place on Friday next.
Toll Charges.— The Portobello Eoad Board', at the meeting on Saturday, decided to reduce the toll to those travelling daily by issuing, quarterly tickets, from the 30th of June nextr, at 10s, to free one horse and" cart ; if two horses^ double that sum. To those going to Dunedin, every day — milk stippliers, mail coach, etc. — it * means a reduction of more than half. T.b*
soil seems to have panned out well for the past year," bicycles alone contributing £111 183. Road Works. — The Road Board is carrying out some substantial improvements on the "beach road near Anderson's Bay, by widening the road from the embankment to the Bay View Hotel, snd in lowering the bridge to its old level, at the same time strengthening and repairing it. In the meantime the road is closed, all traffic having to go round Anderson's Bay. Indian Famine. — Our board's chairman (Mr W. Dickson) deserves credit for the practical support he ''gave to the Indian famine relief fund circular, sending out one of the board's servants with a subscription list, which, up to_Saturday last, had reached over £17. Uaud Sales. — The offering of the Camp estate sections must have been disappointing to the "trustees at the auction sale, wheiKvery little sold; but since then nearly all the farms sloping to the bay have been sold at good prices. Ecclesiastical. — The late Wesleyan home missionary stationed here, Mr Belton, has been transferred to the denominational college, Auckland, and is low succeeded by Mr Angus M'Bean, recently arrived from Victoria.
