DUNEDIN HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.

The annual meeting of the Dunedin Horticultural Society was held at the Agricultural Hall on Monday night, Mr J. "White (president) being in the chair. . There .were about 20 members present, and opologies for non-at- . tendance were received from Messrs T. K. Sidey, A. Morilzson, and J. Barton. - I The Chairman, in moving the adoption of the annual report, which has already been j published, said the outgoing committee were again in a position to congratulate members upon the continued success of the society. The , membership had increased from 4-36 to 4-4-2, j the prize money had been increased from £137 I to £160, and the number of exhibit ors_ had in- , creased, so that there was a material increase in all those matters that related to the welfare ( of the "society. The balance sheet showed a slight falling off as compared with last year, the expenditure on some heads being a. little more. They had spent a great deal more in . advertising, and also more on the rent of j halls, and there was an increased expenditure ' for labour, ' express hire, and so on. On all ' these heads -the expenditure "was heavier than ; .last year, and the receipts had not "increased ' in the" same ratio, consequently the balance was a trifle less than last year. -He hoped- that ' this year, this state of things would be, re- , versed; and that the incoming committee would -be able to snow that they liad • restored -the ' equilibrium, and that the income^was greater | than the expenditure. The chairman went on to refer to various items in the balance sheet, : and expressed the opinion that if committee- i men would turn out and attend to the staging ' of plants at shows it would save a considerable j amount of outlay for laboxir. In speaking of , the recent visit of Mr Peter Barr to this city, ' he also stated that that gentleman had pro- . mised the society a cup from his firm for com- , petition among bulb growers here. He (the chairman) believed that Mr Barr's visit would certainly give a fillip "to the culture of the _ daffodil here, and in that way the society would benefit. The recent Floral Fete at Forbury Park showed that there was in our midst / ■ a vast body of persons who might be induced' , to become exhibitors at-the society's shows."! 1 v j Mr T. Ireland seconded" the motion. He , pointed- out that there had been a large in- .1 crease in the expenditure of, the society's funds ' during the year, and expressed the opinion ! that the committee should husband the funds ' more. - j After further discussion, during which Mr j Burlinson and other members expressed satisfaction with the state of the balance sheet, the motion for the adoption of the report was put and carried. The fbllowing office-bearers were elected for the ensuing year : —President, Mr A. Moritzson; vice-presidents — Messrs G. 'A. Reacle, Alexander Wilson, and J. H. Nimmo ; treasurer, Mr C. Bayley^ - j The following gentlemen were nominated to - -act on the committee, and on a ballot being"taken the voting was as follows : — J. "White 20, H. Glarke 19, O. M. Burlinson 18, J. R. Glover ] •17, A. Marshall 16, " J. Dagger 16, T. K." Sidey I J.'Munden 14, G."B ? Bulldok 13, W. Wills13, A. Youngson 11, -A. Millar 9, J. Barton 7, ' and E. Moss 7. The first 12 of the above were declared duly elected. ■ *, It was decided to pay the treasurer £5 -5s instead of making his office honorary, as here- - tof ore. A proposal, moved by Mr Ireland, to the effect that it be a recommendation to the incoming committee to appoint a competent stager to st.age plants at the society's shows, -was lost. - - i The question of postponing the May show was discussed, and a motion in that direction was'also lost.
