WAILOUAITI COUNTY COUNCIL.

- The ordinary meeting of this County Council was held in the Council Chambers, Hawksbury, on Friday last, when there were present — the Chairman (Mr J. Foote), and Crs C. Duke, A. Graham, A. S. Oibell, and W. Souter.

FIXAKCE.

Accounts for the month, amounting to £227 14s lid, were passed for payment.

INSPECTOR'S REPOET.

Sample's Application.— The estimated cost of clearing the bush off the road line from secion 8, bJock III; to section 2 of 3, block 111, North Harbour and 'Blueskin district, .the length of which was about 38 chains, was given at from £4 to £5. — Consideration deferred.

Clark's Road. — This road from the bridge to Michie's was in fair order, with the exception of about four or five chains, which were slightly rutted, and the gorse was encroaching on this portion of the road very considerably ; and irorn Michie's to the railway crossing there was about 20 chains also slightly mtted, and"would require to be ploughed at each side and xounded up. The estimated co3t was given at £5. — The inspector was instructed to attend to the work.

Carey's Bay. — At the foreshore at this bay notices had been erected, and Sergeant Geerin had been requested to send a constable round occasionally to see that no one deposited rubbish, or offensive matter oa the side, of the road, and if this matter was attended to the state of the foreshore would bs improved, and there would be nothing to complain of. — Ap j preyed

The .Valuation 'department, Dunedin, wrote stating that, with -a view to assisting local authorities m notifying any alterations which may become necessary on the valuation rolls, the department had prepared a form on which such alterations could be -forwarded. It was necessary foi the accurate adjustment of- the. rolls that the department should obtain full information as to sales "or lea^e, and that it was ''desirable that the information, should, if possible, be obtained without necessitating conqspondencc on the matter. — Received:

Dr Borrie, .Port Chalmers, applied for payment or certain expenses incurred in the removal of a patient from the Crescent Hotel, Carey's Bay, to a cottage at Deborah Bay, for isolation, the Government having agreed to pa; tho expenses of one patient r an artillery man, and referred him to the council to pay ths cost of the other patients. — The council declined to recognise any liability in the matter, and Dr Borrie to be informed to this effect.

Mr J. Byrne, Merton, wrote tendering his resignation as ranger. — Accepted by the tounc.il.

Mr J. Wells, Dunedin, applied for permission "to relay ihe tramway on the line formally occupied by Mr J. Murdoch, starting from the railway .at Waitati, along the Main road as far as section 5, block 11, .North Harbour and Blueskin district. The' Secretary of the .Treasury, Wellington,^ intimated thai goldfields revenue, amounting to £14 11s, had been remitted to the credit' of the council at the Bank of New Zealand. — Received.

Mr M. Dillon, Mansfordtown, applied for permission to erect a fence on the bank in front of his property, section 90.— Permission granted during the pleasure of the council. Mr E. Michelson, Heyward Point, wrote offering the council a piece of land free for a deviation through section' 16, block V, providing they did the fencing and closed the old dotted track, as "it would never be of any use to the county. — The council agreed to accept the offer if Mr Michelson would take £7 in lieu of fencing the road.

Mr A. ~M. Ross, Purakanui, wrote informing the council that the following persons" were proposed as a Cemetery Committee at a meeting held in the district — namely, "W. Mawson, sen., R. Horn, jun., F. Driver, C. Williams, and A. M. Ross. — The council agreed to take the necessary steps to have the committee legally appointed, and Mr Ross to be informed to this effect. The Mayor of Dunedin forwarded a circular in reference to the Indian famine relief fund, pointing out the action being taken on the appeal to the public, and inviting the co-operation of the council in aiding the cause. — The council decided to use their TSest "efforts" in "obtaining contributions. , - . , ' , , PB?iTidS r &. . Mr J. M'Lachlan and 105' ratepayers and residents at Mansfordtoyn, a-nd -surrounding dis"tricts, petitioned th£ council,' drawing attention to the disgraceful ; state of the foreshore oxsppsite the - Crescent Hotel, where^two .cul-, verts emptied their oontentson tlie water edge of the. road just at high water mark. The deposit from these and from other sources had converted the foreshore into a hotbed of disease "and menace to the health of the inhabitants. •The petitioners pointed out that this nuisance had been a continual catJse of sickness for some time past. They urged the council to take immediate steps to have the existing state of things remedied, especially in view of the bubonic plague being introduced into New Zealand, and that a portion of the foreshore should be reclaimed. To carry this out it was suggested that the member for the district should be approached with a view to obtaining a vote from the Government to enable the work to be undertaken. — The council resolved to forward the petition" to the-member for the district, asking him to use his endeavours to obtain a grant of money from the Government for- the purpose of reclaiming the foreshore as- suggested. Mr "IV. Mackay and seven other, ratepayers in the Blueskin Riding petitioned the council drawing attention to" the old Port Chalmers road, which was becoming impassable owing to the encroachment of the manuka scrub; also to the lower road between the Cemetery road and the show ground, which ' was dangerous to both foot and horse traffic. — Referred to the inspector for a report. ~ *; ■■ OTHER MATTERS. ' • The inspector was- instructed to prepare plan and specifications for works required on the -Main roads to Kilmog Hill, and. tenders to be called for the work at- next meeting ; that in the event of the inspector being unable to procure boring rods he have a few holes dug on the road to find the rock at the slip ; arid that the > .chairman, inspector, and membex for the riding wait upon Mr Dodds to try 'and arrange . with him a3 to the encroachment on his section.

It was resolved — ' Tha'., the "inspector'prepare an' estimate for widening the track 9ft from Kempt's corner to the education reserve, Mount ,Cargill estate."

Council with full power to act in all matters appertaining to the road and necessary deviation -running through the properties of Mr John Douglas and the Hawksbury Borough Council.

The clerk was instructed to give notice to all ratepayers who have not paid their rates within 14 days from date of notice, that legal proceedings will be taken to recover the same with 10 per cent, added.

, Mr John -Douglas waited upon the council in reference to Stenhouse's road, to which certain improvements -were required to give him access to a portion of his property, when the council resolved — " That tenders be called for the necessary work to portion of Stenhouse's road already formed."
