CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP. WELLINGTON, April 24.
At the Chess Congress the game between Mackay and- Barnes proved an even and exciting game. At move 81 a draw was agreed upon. This leaves Barnes and Mason a tie for the championship, and they will play off to-morrow.
April 25,
For the Chess Championship the points are : — Barnes (Wellington) and Mason (Wellington), 7 each; James (Wellington) and Cleiand (Dunedin), 5 each; Mackay (Wellington), Kimmer (Masterton), and Still (Wellington), 4 each; Earee (Masterton) and Edwards (Dtmedin), 3; Brown (Wellington), 2. Mason and Barnes were occupied all day and part of the night in playing off for the championship and prizes of ;£2O and £12. Barnes should have won, but missed several chances, and ultimately had \io submit to another draw. They will play again to-morrow. James and Cleland divide third and fourth prizes of £8 and £3. present is 'the first tie since Barnes tied the late Mr Hookham in 1889. Mason is about 23 years of age.
April 26.
After playing another draw to-day Mason and Barnes met for the third time this evening to settle the chess championship. A tough game resulted in Mason winning.
