N.Z. Championship Tournament.

I D. A. BRODIE, CHAMPIOW. The fifth annual championship tournament was concluded at Invercargill last Thursday morning. The finish was remarkably close,' , Messrs Brodie' and Gardiner lasu year) being equal with 18§ points, and Borehamt only half a point behind. In the play-off with. Brodie for the title and first prize Gardiner collapsed, the strain having been too much for him. On Thursday evening" a banquet was provided for the contestants and others, Mk Raeside occiipying the chair. A pleasant evening was spent,, speeches being made by several of those present. The prizes were distributed as follows: —D. >A.^ Brodie,-championship and; £20; J: Gardih-er? >~ second; ,#,12"; J. -feoreham, 'third; £8; J. A. Lucas," fourth/ '£B; 1- J. -Mulvey, fifth,." £3; -J. Brodie won the^ first, three, and Gardiner'resigned, Brodie "thus re-* ? taining the championship with first prize f £20.. TOURNAMENT JOTTINGS. Lucas * and Gardiner played right "through' without the loss of a- game —a capital perfor-" raance. ' - - Brodie's score of 16 wins is noj; likely-"to bebeaten in a hurry, being two-thirds ,of the full number of games played. , < , . Mr J. A. Scott came right on to Dunedin after the tourney. He is looking and feeling well. Messrs Gardiner, Liicas, Scott, and Mulvey, stopped at Woodlands on Friday on the way .home from Invercargill, and remained until Saturday. They speak in terms of the highest praise of the enthusiasm of the Woodlands district,, and also of the warm-hearted hospitality of Mr Marshall, of the Woodlands Hotel. Several boards were kept going merrily on Fricfay evening, and the display of playing strength in Woodlands augurs well for their success during the coming winter. • Mr J. A. Boreham is in fine health and form. During last year he practically left draughts alone, and went south without any preparation. Readers may remember that Warnock, who won the Australasian Championship in Dunedin in the Exhibition Tournament, had not played for some years prior to. that contest. .. * Several tourney players are convinced that Mr J. Gardiner is the best player in New Zealand,' • and will soon demonstrate the fact.
