A CURIOUS INCIDENT.
A curious incident occurred at the battle of Rietfontein. The Gloucesters were advancing in the manner which they have now learned to adopt, and which is similar to the Boer tactics — that is to say, by crouching low and moving from one sheltering antheap or stone to another in very extended order, when suddenly on the brow of the hill, silhouetted again&t the sky, stood the delicate form of a springbok. There it stood, shaking like an aspen leaf in every limb, and with twitching ears hesitating, and evidently at a lops which way to turn. The thunder of the batteries, the cracking of the rifles, the muffled roar of battle, distracted its poor terrified little wits. Then,- after standing terror-stricken for a minute or so, it bolted right through tlie Gloucestsrs. with long, easy strides. Every man of the Gloucester^, with the usual good-nature of the British Tommy, whether on active service or in the barrackroom, lifted his helmet as the pretty animal passed, and gave the unusual visitor a hearty cheer. — Daily Telegraph.
