DIPTON.

March 26. — This has been a fine month for •harvest operations, so far as the weather is concerned, and the farmers have mado the most of it. It has been so fine that I hear some liave threshed out of the stook — rather a risky proceeding for Southland. Everyone seems anxious to get their oats into the market while 'the prices are good. Crops this year are good kind abundant, and with fair prices farmers 'Should do well.

Fire.— On the 28th ult. tlr stable of Mr iodorick Finlayson was burned down. The 9?e occurred about midday., and .without arijr

apparent cause, as there was no one known to have been in the stable since early davvii, when Mr Finlayson left for a mob of sheep at Winton. The .stable was insured in the New Zealand office for £70, and the claim has been settled, which speaks well for the promptness of the office Mr Finlayson will still be a loser by some £30 to £10.— At about 8 p.m. of the 17th inst. Mr_Sam Minchpr had I a stable burnea down. It was uninsured and there is no accounting for the fire. Wedding.— On the 6th inst. Mr Wm. Wilson was married to Miss May Milligan. The wedding, which was a quiet one, came ofi" at the house of the parents of the bride. A few days afterwards Miss Capil, of Caroline, was united to Mr Bushy at the bride's residence, the Rev. Mr W. Brown officiating on both occasions. I am sure the good wishes of the district go with both parties. Amusements. — The Happy St. Geoiges gave a performance on the Bth inst. to a fairly good house. Mr St. George sang "The abbentininded beggar" at the end of the pertoirnance, when com to the ealue of £2 was thrown on the stage. They are announced to appeal heie again on Thursday, 20th insl., when I fancy they will have a bumper house, as they were 'much appreciated on their former visit, anci many who did not hear them then have made tip their minds to do so this time. Dipton Estate Stock Sale. — The displeuishing sale of the Dipton estate on the 15th inst. was a great success, everything being cleared at satisfactory figures. In the evening the genial manager, Mr Miller, was invited to meet some of his friends at the Railway Hotel, where he was enteitained and presented with a weighty purse of sovereigns. Mr A. F. Hawk presided, and made the presentation, and one and ah joined in wishing Mr Miller and his wife anci family every success and happiness in their new home. The meeting terminated about 10 p.m. Accident— On the 17th inst. the Rev. Mr J. L. A. Kayll, while driving from Winton to Dipton, met with what might have been a serious accident. When nearing the south end of Dipton, while he was looking round at something that had attracted his attention, the wheel of the buggy went over a flax bush. The jolt was so great that Mr Kayll was thrown out of the buggy, and the horse bolted, dragging him by the reins, which became entangled ro\mci Mr Kayll's legs. The horse and bug-y eventual iy turned over in a ditch, and sa\c a few bruises neither driver nor horse was much the worse. Anglican Bazaar.— A bazaar- in aid of the funds of the Anglican Church is to be held in the hall on the day and night of the 19 oh ot April, and as it is some time now since their last efforts, this one should be a success. The different items are in the hands of competent committee3/and the success of the affair now lies with the general public, who gensially respond pretty liberally on such occasions.
