Notes from Lyeu.
{From Our Own Correspondent.) LYELL, March 23.
The Mine Manager of the Alpine mine reports as follows:— " The contractors for No. 7 level have driven 20ft for the week. The country is still very soft, with a little water in the footwall side of the drive. The reef track is not being so well defined as last week. A crosscut was started last night into the footwall, which has been driven 6ft through soft, slaty country. Below No. 10 level south all the stone has been taken out during the week. Stoping below No. 11 level north is still 'being carried on on a reef from 3ft to Bft in width. The winze below No. 12 level south has been sunk 9ft, making the total depth of the winze 20ft. There is 4ft of very hard, solid stone in the bottom, carrying a few colours of gold. A patch of coarse gold was struck last Saturday, but did not continue for any distance, as the leader containing it laid between the big hard reef and the hanging wall. For the week 95 tons quartz have been sent to the battery. The scraping of top plates yielded 1320z amalgam from 240 tons.
