The first clay's racing of the Autumn meeting of the Dunedin Jockey Club was held on Wednesday on tho Wingatui racecourse. The weather was not very favourable on Dunedin Cup Day, which was unfortunate after the spell of fine weather experienced in and around Dunedin. The morning looked blsck and threatening, and not a few hesitated to go &o far as the new rac3coar»e at Wingatui, but towards noon all doubts were for the time di.-,pel3cd, and for a few hours the day could not hare been finer. However, about 4- o'clock the rain began, first to drop, and then to pour down in a relentless manner, making the cautious ones glad to have been well prepared with dark dresses or umbrellas and cloaks. The rain came on most unexpectedly, and mrmy ladie.7 had a not over-pleasant experience rushing 10 overcrowded trains, and some, unable to find standing; room, had to remain on the platform or grounds, with no more protection from the rain than a light-coloured parasol. However, the unfortunate ending to the day will doubtless be forgotten, and only the pleasant hours spent before the rain came on remembered. A great- many improvements have been made to the course during the year that has elapsed .-in<jc the opening meeting, and now the lawn, saddling paddock, and racing track arc all covered with beautiful given sward, mid o»i Wednesday o gay ?ccne was presented, the attendance, especially of ladies, being unusually large, and the afternoon so hot that the greater nuin'opf favoured the lawns in prefe 'ence 10 the stand.
