FIFTH DAY. Ferric and Stewart having ballotted for their undecided tie, the lot fell to Ferric to retire, and Stewart now met Freedman in the third round. A Cross was played on the 10-14 line, Stewart with the blacks, and a different game resulted drawn. Freedman was not so successful with ftie Black side, and sucexunbed after a hard struggle. In the evening Freedman was again unfortunate, losing the first game with the White side of the Ayrshire Lassie. .In the third round Bryden beat Buchanan with the Edinburgh, and secured the tie, passing into the semi-final, where he further distinguished himself by scoring a win oS Camp-* bell. Saturday proved eventful by Freedman equalising in a most remarkable manner. The opening drawn was the Souter, and it promised little to one wishing to force a win. Freedman, however, played a bold game. Adopting the 22-17 line, he replied to Stewart's 14-18 with 17-14, 10-17, 19-10, 7-14, giving a Doctor character to the formation. The coup was successful beyond expectation. Stewart though a man up, got into a hopeless mess, from which he found it impossible to extricate himself, even by throwing the man, and he finally resigned. The following shows the play: — Black, 1, 5, 6, 9 ; kings, 14, 22. White, 13, 20, 28 ; kings, 2, 3, 11. Black (Stewart) to move. 6-10, 13-6, 2-7, W. wins. Two other games were played, both drawn. Monday saw the two exports at the board again, but the play was of a less sensational character, and the four games played all resulted in draws. Score : I Win?. Draw.!*. Wins. 2 Stewart ... 7 Freedman 2 EIGHTH DAY. Tuesday still found Stewart and Freedman contending for the honour of entering the semifinal; but this time Fortune favoured the Fife lad. After two hard drawn games in the forenoon, the contestants met in the evening to play the second side of the Dundee. Freedman with Black tried a new line, which gave Stewart a man up on the weaker position. Stewart, however, threw the man at the proper stage, and materially improved his positon. Ultimately, the holder of the champonship had to resign, after the game had lasted five hoxars. Score: — Wins. Draws. Wins. 3 Stewart ... 9 Freedman 2 NINTH DAY. Wednesday found Stewart confronted with a, new opponent in Mr G. M. Bonar, a former prizewinner, who at the forenoon sitting managed to draw the three games played. In the evening Bonar got the Black side of the Double Corner, and speedily came to grief. The tenth day's play took place on Thursday in Glasgow, when Stewart and Bryden met each other in the final struggle for the championship. During the forenoon's sitting Stewart won a, "Defiance" with black men, and drew the next one. In the evening two "Dyke" openings were contested, and proved of great interest, both resulting in draws. • Bonar and Campbell met lo decide the third and fourth - prizes. Two "Maid-of-the-Mills" were drawn. Each won an "Ayrshire Lassie," and Campbell won both sdes of "Laird and Lady," thus settling the round in his favour. SEMI-FINAL. Wins. Draws.
