AUSTRALIAN HORSES IN ENGLAND

J. E. Brewer, now in England, had a large amount of bad luck with his jumpers at Chribtmaa. At Windsor, on December 23, Battalion wa- backed down to 6 to 4- in a field of eight for a two-mile Maiden Hurdle Race, but the old fellow could only get third to Marauder and Monotype, both three-year-old)-. However, as Battalion was considered unlucky to have suffered defeat on this occasion, he was made an 11 to 8 fa\ourite in nnother maiden hurdle race at BLempton Park three days later, there being 11 runners. He led over the last jump, but then a horse named Thurling came along and settled him, though, according to some of the English writers, the result was more due to Matthews's superiority over Brewer as a horseman than anything else. Concerning that opinion, Sydney Referee remarks that Matthews must be an exceptionally good rider if he in better than Brewer, allowing the latter to be in form. Toinpdo had a run at Windsor, bul finished nowhere, with 12.7, in a two miles hurdle race. At Eempton Park he slightly improved on this form, carrying 12.0 into third place in a two miles race won by Soliman, 12.10. Another Australian in His Grace suffered eapy defeat at Lingiield. With 11.12 he was backed down to 7 to 2 for the Winter Hurdle Race, but the favourite, Sam, who carried the same v eight, beat him in a canter by 15 length. Four days later Tornado gave S mi 21b, and got home in front of him, which, taking p line through the latter, suage-its that Tornado is a good deal better than His Grace at the present time. At Manchester, on January 1, Battalion won the Maiden Hurdle Race, but as the ftake was only 92sovs. and the Melbourne horse started firrit favourite, there was not much to be made out of the win.
