THE OPINIONS OF A VISITOR.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, February 13.

Interviewed "at Wellington to-day, the Hon. Thomas Bucklin, a. Colorado senator, who has come to Australia and New Zealand to inquire into our revenue-raising methods, expies&ed himself astonished at the amount and growth of our public debt. He compared the Colorado debt of £400,000 with New Zealand's 47 millions, and, due diffidence, as a stranger, expressed the opinion that it was about time the people started on an entirely opposite tack. He notices that there is" a tendency to extravagance amongst the people, wiio encourage instead of curb successive Governments in the expenditure of public raone}-. Mr Bucklin is convinced as the result of inquiries which he has inside tlidt the prosperity which is apparent in New Zealand comes moie from our liberal land laws and land .settlement system than from our so-called labour legislation.
