ORIENTAL SIMILES.
— Some of the similes used by Oriental advertisers are lenuu'kable. Here are one or two specimens which, have recently appeared in Eastern newspapers : — " Good& dispatched as expeclitiously as a cannon bj.11." " Pll reels done up •with as much cave as that bestowed on her husband by a loving wife.' "Paper tough as elephant's hide." " The print of our book is clear as ciystal ; the m itter elegant as a singing girl." " Customers treated as politely as by two rival steamship companies."' " Silks and satins smooth as a lady's cheek, and coloured like the rainbow."' — A Lidy in Pretoria, writing to her uncle, describes the deserted state of the capital, her husband having been ordered lo the artillery camp, and neaily all the men having gone to the front. " Mrs and I sleep in one room,"' she says. " and I am never without my loaded revolver in front of my bed, just ready to put my hand on if required. I am surprised at myself. I ulways fancied that I should be terrified drj'ijig .such a waiuuve time, but — wonder oS wonders ! — I am quite calm, and often feel as if I could go to the border myself. 1 ' This lady as-ures her uncle that nearly every -woman in Pretoria has the same feel-
