Colonus. — The Transvaal was annexed by Great Britain for tho protection of the Boers against the blacks in 1877, Sir T. Shepstone being sworn in as administrator. After the blacks had been subdued by Great Britain the Transvaal was declared a Crown colony, but this did not meet with the approval of the Boers, who met and claimed independence. The Boers thereupon seized Heidelberg on December 16, 1879, and proclaimed the South African Republic, with Kruger as president,' next day. British troops were opposed on the 20th Decembei, Potchefstrcom seized on the 27th, and o Captain J. M. Elliot treacherously killed on" the 29th. Troop 3 were sent from Britain in December of the following year, and Sir G. V. Colley took command in January, 1881. Wood and Roberts followed, and an armistice, proposed by the Boers, was accepted by the British m March, 1881. Partial autonomy was ceded by the British in August, 1882, the British troops departing about December 22, 1882. j F. V. — Communicate with Mr A. J. Old Times. — Three of the Maungatapu murderers were hanged at Nelson on October 6, I&66— Kelly, Burgess, and Levy. The other scoundrel, Sullivan, was sentenced to impiisonment for life, in consequence of his turning Queen's "evidence. After serving some ten years in Dunedin gaol he was liberated, and is supposed to have been snniggled out of the country. (2) Ye 3, Kelly and Burgess served a term in Dunedin gaol, prior to the gang taking to the roads on the Coast, being sentenced to three years' imprisonment for burglary on May 22, 1862. J. H. — The Kelly gang comprised four members, of whom two perished in the flames at the fire at Glenrowan, one was shot dead, and the leader (Ned Kelly) was taken alive, wounded, and afterwards executed,/ Henley. — In the simplest and most natural way and the fewest words possible. There are quite a number of canards which, on inquiry, turn out to be incorrect. The Horse Purchase Committee consist of three very shrewd gentlemen, who are not at all likely to be caught napping.
