ATHLETICS.

A3UTEUB ATHLETIC CKAMPIONSBIPS. ANNUAL SPORTS MEETING. WELLINGTON, February 17. The eleventh annual meeting of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Asoociation was held on the Basin Reserve this afternoon under favourable conditions. Tho attendance of the pubic was not so large cs >i was expected, and at no time could there ha^e been more than two thousand present. In the 440 yds Flat Championship, Mark Herbert, who finished almo-t abreast of the winner, was accidentally, though severely, spiked by a club mate in the early part of the race. A vein was pierced, and Herbert had to be removed in a cab. A feature of the meeting was the performances of the Auckland representatives. They were simply undeniable. In G. Smith they sent down a veritable Trojan. He was sent in the two short races, aiid al«o in the two hurdle races, and the confidence entrusted him was not misplaced, he winning all the events in a masterly manner, which stamps him as Ihe best athlete the colon} 7 - possesses at present. Before the long distance hurdle race started Smi'li was vomiting severely, and a^ked for a short postponement, of '(he event in order that he mislvt send for some »timulant, but the otheicompetitors being out the committee unfortunately could not ocquicsce. and Smith decided to start, and won the cvevt rather easily, and was hrartilv cheered, beino; carried off the field shoulder high. Laurie and Madill were another worthy pair of noi'therner», ond, as will be seen from the description of Uie events, they each played a prominent part in securing the banner for Auckland. Madill's throwing of the hammer was highly meritorious, but there is some doubt whether lie will be 3 warded V\o rroord. as the throw_ was somewhat down hill. The distance reqji'Herpd is a record for Aiiotralasia, and is over 15ft beyond tho New Z°aiind record. In several inslnnrr the association's standards were passed, tl < succeeding in doing so securing the a-* cia* ion's cans. The meeting was conduct cm an admirable manner by the local committee.
