Low (running); secretary, Mr A. J. Sullivan; centre consul, Mr H. B, Courtis. The twenty-first annual sports meeting of the Dunedin Cycling Club was held on tha Caledonian ground on Saturday. Fine wea-. ther prevailed, but the attendance, although' fairly good, was not so laree as might hava

been expected, seeing that the net proceeds of the sports were to be devoted to the Otago -and Southland contingent fund. The programme comprised 20 events, and these were got off very expeditiously. The racing, on the whole, was, however, of rather an uninteresting character, although there were a lew close finishes dtiring the meeting. The big event of the meeting — the Dunedin Wheel Jtace — brought out a considerable number cf competitors. Seven started in the final heat, which was narrowly won by A. E. Ran"dell, of the Otago Cycling Club. The KaiIcorai Band were present at the sports, and Enlivened the proceedings by playing a numIber of selections at intervals throughout the afternoon. The takings at the gate amounted to £57 11s, and there was probably about £20 worth of tickets sold outside. As the ■expenses were heavy, it is doubtful if there •will be anything, after paying these to hand over to the contingent fund. The following are the results : — ONE-MILE NOVICE ' HANDICAP. First .prize £2, second £I.— T. L. Begg, 15yds, 1 ; R. Smith, 70yds, 2; E. H. Chatfi^d, scr, 3. Also started: G. A. Bell 15yds, G. Nelson 20yds, A. Morrison 25yds, J. W. Hill 30yds, C. F. Lethaby 35yds, C. Rouffe 45yds, R. Nagle 70yds. Nagle and Smith showed the way for about three-quarters of a mile. Chatfield then went to the front, but just before entering the ■atiaia;ht he was overhauled by Bejjg, -who won "by about five yards. Time, 2min 29 4-ssec. - HALF-MILE CASH HANDICAP. First prize £i, second £1, third £L. — First lieat : A. Sangster, 85yds, 1 ; A. R. Barker, 15yds, 2; A. Hslston, 10yds, 3. Also 'started: R. Walne ecr, M. Bennett 10yds, M. Randrup 10yds, E. This was a. close race between Cushnie and Holland, the former winning by a wheel. Time, lmin 4sec. Final heat: G. Cushine, 85yds, 1; N. Ralston, 40yds, 2; A. Sangster, 85yds, 3. Also started: A. R. Barker 15yds, A. Ralston 10yds, and H. Holland 50yds. Cushnie led most of the way, and won by about a couple of feet. Time, lmin 4 2-ssec. ONE-MILE BICYCLE HANDICAP (amattur). Reid 70yds, C. W. Rouffe 95yds, G-. C. Moore 120 yds. White went to the front about half a lap from home, and won easily by about twenty yards. Time, 2min 30 l-sscc. 220 yds FLAT HANDICAP. DUNEDIN WHEEL RACE (two miles handicap. First prize £10, second £6, third £2. — First heat: C. Cushnie, 285 yds, 1; P. Ralston, 310 yds, 2; E. H. Wall, 25yds, 3; A. Ealston, 25yds, 4. Also started: A. R. Barker .45yds, M. Randrup 100 yds, T. Kirkwoocl 150ydSj N. Ralston 170 yds, and E. Crawford 23ayds. When a mile had been .covered the order of the first three^was Chatfield, P. Ralston, and. Cushnie. At a "mire and . a-half Cuslxnie went to the front, and Ralston ch&nged places with Chatfield. With a lap to go Ralston was leading, Cushnie being second, and Chatfield thud. Coming round the top turn in the last lap Cushnie took command, and won by thiee yards. Time, 4min 46 4-ssec. Second heat: J. M'Mullan, 235 yds, 1; H. Gunthorpe, 235 yds, 2; A. E. Randell, 280 yds, 3; G. A. Bell, 310 yds, 4. Also started: M. Bennett 25yds, J. Chalmers 25yds, A- W. Humphreys 100 yds, A. Huston 120 yds, A. Holland 170 yds, ancl G. Dempster 300 yds. Randell was in front when a mile liad been covered, Bell being second, and Dempster third. At the end of the next lap Bell was at the head of affairs, with Dempster second, and Raudell third. In the next lap Randell got into second place, and M'Mullaii was "third. Randell assumed the lead in the" next lap, M'Mullan being second, Dempster third, and Gunthorpe fourth. M'Mullan shot in front when about 200 yds irom home, and Gunthorpe took second position soon aiterwards, the former winning by about seven yards. Time, 4mm 45 3-ssec. Final heat : A. E. Randell, 280 yds, 1; P. Ralston, 310 yds, 2; C. Cushnie, 2Ssyds, 3. All the others who had qualified started w^th the exception of A. Ralston. Cushnie was. 111 command at the end of the first mile, Rancfell being second. P. Eal&ton third, and Bell fourth. Randell weni to the front in the next lap, while P. Ralston was second, and Bell third. A lap further on P. Ralston was showing Ihe way, Bell being second, Cushnie third, and Randell fourth. When a mile and three-quarters had been covered Cushnie was leading, Randell, P. Ralston, and Bell following in the older named. Randell put on a big spurt about halfway down the straight in the Jast lap, and getting in front won by about a couple of lengths, there being not lflucb diffeience between P. ltalston and Cushnie. Time, 4min 40 2-ssec. HALF-MILE FLAT HANDICAP. First prize, trophy, valued at £2; second, trophy, value JEI. — F. Hotop, 20yds, 1; W. Gilroy, 40yds, 2. Also competed: W. Olsen scr, A. E. Bragg 25yds, W. O. Eemphorne 30yds, W. Martin 30yds, -S. N. Bell 35yds, H. Bremner 40yds, and P. Mills 40yd,3. Olsen quickly xeduced the handicaps, and at the end of 0110 lap had only three opposed to him. The distance, however, seemed too much for him, ancl lie was passed by Hotop and Gilroy on entering the straight, the former winning with a good deal to spare. Time. 2min 4 2-s sec. ONE-MILE CASH HANDICAP. First prize £i, second £1, third £1. First, secon-d, third, and fourth men to qualify for final ; the winner of each, heat to receive 10s, unless winning the final.— First heat: G. Cushnie, 140 yds, 1; M. Bennett, 15yds, 2; N. Ralston. SOyds, 3; T. Kirk Wood', 80yds, 4. Other compewtirs : M. Randrup 50yds, E. Chatfield 130 yds, G. Dempster 150 yds, A. Morrison 180 yds. The lastnamed competitor fell shortly after the start of the race. At the last lap Cushnie assumed the lead, with Chatfield next, but that rider was displaced by Bennett, Ralston, arid Kirkwood. Won by about three lengths. Timo, 2mm 18 2-ssec. Second heat : H. Holland", 80yds, 1 ; A. W. Humphreys, 50yds, 2; A. San-stpr, J soyds, 3; E. Crawford, 105 yds, 4. The other nd»rs were: A. Huston 60yds, A. E. Rordell 135 yds, D. Bray 175 yds, R. Smith (roadster) 190 yds. At the end of the half-mile Smith, Bray, Sangster, and Randell were close together in fiont in the order named, and at the end of the third lap 10yds would have covered the lot. Just before entering the straight Holland spurted and came away with a strong lead, which he held, crossing the mark with about Syria to spare. Time, 2min lGssc. Final heat . The men who started inthe^final heat were — Cushnio, Bennett, N. Ralaton, Kiikwood, lloKp'-d, Humphreys, Sangster, and Crawford. B. Crawford, 105 yds, 1 ; H. Holand, 80yds, 2 ; -v. San-,-sjter, 150 yds, 3. With two laps goDe Cushnie was in the lead, with Sangbier second and Crawford third. Crawford then assumed the lead, Holland close up. The farmer held his

own, managing to beat Holland by about a length. Time, 2min 16sec. HALF-MILE BICYCLE HANDICAP. First prize trophy valued at £3, second £% third £1. — A. It. Grierson, scr, 1 ; W. J. Pearse, 20ytla, 2 ; J. W. Hills, 40yds, 3. Included among the competitors were: C. G-. White syds, K. Melville 15yds, H. B. Oakey 25yds, G. A. Nelson 30ya<3, E. H. Reid 35yds, C. W. Rouffe 50yds, and G . C. Moore 60yds. Pearse went into first place after going half the distance, but was overhauled by Grierson, who won by a couple or three yards. Time, lmin lOsec. ! TWO-MILE CASH CHAMPIONSHIP OF OTAGO. First prize £G, second £2, third £1 ; ' lap piizes, 2s 6d each.-— E. A. Wall (Wanganui) 1, A. R. Barker (Chiistchurch) 2, M. Bennett (Hawke's Bay) 3. Also competed: J. Chalmers (Wellington), A. W. Humphreys (Clvristchurch), A. Huston (Ashbttrton), M. Ranrlrup (New Plymouth), A. Ralston (Otago), N. Ralston (Otago). Randrup won the first la,p, N. Ralston the second, giving way to Randrup in the third, who was in turn displaced by Huston for the fourth. Huston hung on to his position for the next two laps, when Randiup again went to the front. When the eighth and last lap was reached Bennett shot away with a tremendous rush, but the Wanganui man, Wall, was watching him, and both he and Barker passed him in the straight, Wall winning with very little to spare. A. Ralston was fourth man, and only a few yards away from fourth place. Of the lap money Huston won 7s 6d, N. Ralston 2s Gd, and Randrup 7s 6d. The time for the rpce was 4min J TWO°MILE AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP OF OTAGO. First prize gold medal (£3), second gold medal (£2) ; lap prizes 2s Gd each.— A. R. Grierson (Otago) 1, C. G. Wmte (Otago) 2. Also started: J. W. Hills, K. Melville, W. J. Pearse, E. H. Reid, C. W. Rotiffe (all Otago), H. B. Oakey (Christchtirch) - Rouffe annexed the first lap, but after that lys dropped awi'y and was not heard of again. The three succeeding laps were won by Melville, the next two by Hills, Reid taking the seventh. In the last lap Grierson went to the front with a rush, and a close run home ensued between him and White, Grierson crossing the mark first by about a wheel, and Melville filling third place. The lap money went to Hills (ss), Melville (7s Gd), Reid (2s 6d), and Roufie (2s 6d). Time, smin 15sec. I THREE-MILE BICYCLE (SCRATCH) RACE. First prize £8, second £i, third. £1, with lap money 2s 6d each lap.— A. R. Barker 1 (Christclrurch) 1, A. Ralston (Otago) 2, E. A. , Wall (Wanganui) 3. Also competed- M. Bennett (Hawke's Bay), J. Chalmers (Wellington), A. W. Humphreys (Christchurch), A. Huston (Ashburton), M. Randrup (New Plymouth), N. Ralston (Otago). Randrup assumed the lead, I and won the first lap, then giving v/ay to N. Ralston. Chalmers then showed the way, and about this time Bennett letired. A. Ralston next lap passed the judge first, when Randrup | forged ahead, winning two* Successive laps, the completion of which saw N. Ralston retire. The i pace, which had up to this been pretty fast, now I Blackened down. Randrup continued in the | van in passing the judges' enclosure until the final lap, when Barker began to make things very lively, and a great race home ensued between the latter, A. Ralston, and Wall, the men finishing very clo3e together. Of the lap money Randrup won 20s, and Chalmers and the two Ralston's 2s 6d each. Time, 7min 47 2-ssec. _ ' ■
