OKEPUKI.

- February 5. — Tiio weather or late ha° besti somewhat mixed — a combination of a tew nne days, very hot, suddenly cr-angirg to rain, with hiyh cold winds, being th" cause, no doubt, of the many cases of infh.enza >hat have occurred in our midst. Though .he season has been a very changeable one, pastures of all kinds have flourished, and with the high prices ruling for milk, the dairy farmers should be having a good time of it.

Angling. — The Waiau this season has proved to be an excellent resort for lovers of angling, several visitors to that noble river having secured capital baskets of fine fish. Tha Waiau lies about six miles west of Hirstfield, and can easily be reached by buggy, which mpy bo obtained from either of the hostelriea at Hirstfield,

Patriotic Meeting. — Like other places, we have had our patriotic meeting. Though the call for public aid was not lesponded to m regard of numbers as was expected, those that were present showed they were both patriotic and liberal. Mr H. Hirst, member of the riding in the Wallace County Cour. il, the convenor of the meeting, occupied the chair, and 111 a few well-selected remarks explained the nature of the meeting, otker gentlemen following. Patriotic songs were sung between each address. Some £20 was collected in the room, Mr 11. P. Young bemg appointed treasurer and secretary. It was desided to select a, committee who would issue subscription lists sn-l canvass the district. The result I have not as yet been ?b!e to ascertain. The meeting, which was a most enthusiastic one, terminated by singing the national anthem. The collection made at the shale works, each man giving ss, realised £18 Ss.
