NOTES BY TERROIJ. I — The celebrated English bulldog champion. Donax is dead. Donax u f as bred by the late Mr J. Pybus-Sellon, who, it may ba remembered, visited Australia some years ago. Quit© a furore was created when he made his debut some years ago, and the captions bulldog 1 breeders of the old school expressed the opinion that in him was to be found at least the good qualities of the bert old clogs, which, was no mean compliment. He was by Dockleaf out of Dona Disdain, and was whelped in 1892. Amongst the many honours secured by, him the "Stockkceper" mentions the Bulldog Club's Berrie Cup, won at the Kennel Club show, Birmingham, Bulldog Club, and People's Palace shows; while he also gained the etuct dog prize at the Bulldog Club show, this year. — Differences of opinion exist as to tho proper medicine for canine?. Some fanciers adhere to castor oil, others give nothing but rhubarb, while many speak highly of the virtues of Epsom salts. During the warm; weather the latter medicine will be found the most suitable, and if cream of tartar is added to it the mixture will prove an excellent cooling medicine, and will allay heat or fever better than any purgative. Indigestion ia often a source of trouble, and the primary reason of that is because the liver is not acting properly. To cure this trouble it is necessary, to administer a remedy which will act upoii the liver, such as rhubarb, podophyllin, etc., and these simple medicines will often prove of more benefit than mercury and other drugs, which are often responsible for the death of tho canine, although it may be ascribed to other cause 0 . — A matter which is too often neglected in the winter season is that of exercise. Dogs need this quite as much in the winter as a£ other seasons. As a matter of fact, more oxcrciso is needed in winter than at any other time, in ( iJ. f thpt the dog may be warm, • which no n mount of cnddline will effect. Even when the \unthor wet ami stormy the dog should ha 1 p I,i* daily exercise ; it ia necessary, of course, that mi hi 1 - jeturu he be cleaned and propi lly dried, insttad of, as is too often tho case, ]>onu> returned to his kennel in a vretf* clirry, uiH'umiort.iHe condition. —It if, iiot a good plnn to feed a dog just beforo he udoj mil lor oxuicise.
