Burt write to correct a slight error in our issue of 30th xM., acknowledging £1 7s as proceeds of Mr J. F. Kirby's recitation " The absent-minded beggar. ' -Ohis sum represented merely the amount subscribed in one railway carriage only on the return jotxrney from the picnic. MEETING AT PURAKANUI. A large and enthusiastic meeting in aid of the patriotic fund was held in the Purokanui School on Friday last. The school, admission to which was free, was packed. Foote (county councillor) presided. The speakers were tho Rev. Mr Tennent (Port Chalmers) and Mr J. F. Arnold, _ M.H.R. Patriotic address, which were received with applause, were delivered by these gentlemen. Mr M'Tamney, of Seacliff, opened the concert by singing "Sons of the sea" in such a vigorous manner that he had to submit to an encore, which brought in 11s. Miss Mawson sang " Jessie's dream " very sweetly. Mr Ross recited " The Absent-minded Beggar," after which the hat was passed round, and the result was close on £4. The next item was " Soldiers of the Queen," which brought £5 in sight. Miss Baird sang " Loch Lomond " in a very pleasing manner. Mr Horn's item was "Home, boys, home," which was sung in a very spirited manner; and Mr Abel sang " To the front " so takingly that he had to reappear. Mr Barnes recited " The Stoiy of the Stowaway" so well that ho had to reappear and recite " Kissing Cup," with which he was equally successful. "Our Baby" was recited by a little fellow of 10 or 11 years — Master Marlow — in such o manner as to fairly convulse the audience. Mr M'Tamney was the life of the mooting, and made a very persistent "begsar." £5 15s 5d was taken in the room, and the other donations amounted to £19 6s, which makes a total of £25 Is sd. With the singing of the National Anthem the meeting closed at 10.30.
