Ringdove on the 31st, and marched to the hiils above Port Chalmers, where they were very smartly exercised. Their signalmen kept up constant communication with tne ship in Mansford Bay, Port Chalmers. Sharks appear to be numerous in the bay at Napier this season, and are frequently caught by people at the breakwater and breastworks. Recently at the Spit a specimen about sft long was hooked and landed on a small hand-line. Mr J. M. Meredith has sent to the Masterton Museum the head of a very rare fish. The, anost noticeable characteristic is the very great length of the teeth. Mr Meredith says the fish was about sft long, its body being round, something like an eel, only that it was translucent, showing its internal organism imperfectly. On its back it had a fin about a foot high, of a clear blue_colour and as fine as paper. An Auckland telegram says: — The Australian bowlera left for Rotorua to-day, having been defeated in the competition for Messrs Stewart Dawson and Co.'s trophies. At the fourth round in this event Newmarket and Wellington were left in, and play off the final to-morrow. Great interest attaches to this event, as Newmarket were champions, and Wellington second for the Championship Banner. THE AMATEUR ATHLETIC CHAMPION MEETING.
