General French has despatched an overwhelming force to seize Norval's Pont, and bhus cut off the retreat into the Orange Free State of the seven thousand Boers his forces enclose in the hills around Colesberg. Reinforcements will rapidly support Ehe movement. A body of cavalry and the New Zealanders cleared the way for the advance to fcTorval's Pont. Presidents Kruger. and Steyn have sent Lord Roberts a protest against the destruction of farmhouses. Lord Roberts has replied that the charges are vague and unsubstantiated. Wanton . destruction was contrary to British practices.
