At £) meeting of the South Dunedin Borough Council on Monday night the Mayor, at the suggestion of Councillor Marlow, agreed to call a public meeting in the borough at an early dale with the view of obtaining funds for the purpose of purchasing a horse and equipment for the fourth contingent. The Anderson's Bay representatives — Messrs R. Lee, F. Oakden, and J. White — arc calling a public meeting for Thureday night to elect a committee to make a canvass of tho district. They have already received a subscription of £5 from Mr George Woodhead, and further sums arc promised. The Mayor of Roslyn announces that a Kaikorai boy (Corporal John Thorn) having volunteered for service, it has been decided to provide him with a horse and equipment. " B. N. J." commends the movement among public bodies, etc., to give horses for the use of the contingents, and says the whole of the trades and professions might* give horses—, the medical men a "Medico," the bankers a '"Banker," butchers ."Mincemeat," jewellers -""Watehtick," and so on. A correspondent writes suggesting that a horse, to be named "Ironmonger," should. bo presented, and hopes those interested will take the Mnt. The mothers and daughters of Dunedin are invited to meet in the Garrison Hall on Thursday afternoon to take steps to raise fund." to equip and send to South Africa six nurses, and also to make provision for •tending equipments for the contingent.
