BENEVOLENT INSTITUTION TRUSTEES.

The weekly meeting of the Benevolent Trustees, held on the 24th, was attended by the Hon. H. Gourley (in the chair), and Messrs W. Swan, J. Green, P. Treseder, J. Hazlett, C. Ziele, and R. Wilson.

Accounts amounting to £125 17s 8d were passed for* payment. The Secretary stated that the expenses of the institution for December amounted to £306 17s Id. There were 252 inmates, costing an average of 5s 6d each. Some 40 relief cases were dealt with.

Before taking the relief cases, Mr Green proposed a resolution expressing sympathy with Mr Gourley in the loss of his son in the South African war, and in doing so said : Mr Chairman, it has occurred to a few of us, while it is a very painful thing, still it is a duty we owe to you, to ourselves, and to the colony, to express our deep-felt sympathy with.you in the bereavement you have suffered in the loss of your son. It is a very painful ordeal, and it is difficult to find language to express one's sincere sympathy under the circumstances. The late Sergeant Gourley was one of ourselves — a native of this country, — who went forth at his country's call to fight her battles, and in doing so unfortunately sacrificed his life. It is one of the noblest deaths a man can die ; but the parents have different feelings in such a case to the public. I will not offer any lengthy remarks in expressing our heartfelt sympathy for you in the great loss you have suffered in the death of your son, who fell so nobly fighting in the cause of his country. Mr Swan seconded the motion, and. "said : I don't think I require to say any more than endorse the words of Mr Green. Mr Gourley is well aware that we all sympathise very much with him in the loss of his son.

The motion was carried unanimously, after which Mr Green said : Mr Chairman, it is my painful duty to convey to you the resolution expressing our deep sympathy with you in your bereavement. I will put the motion in writing, and the secretary will forward a copy to you. Mr Gourley, who was visibly overcome, thanked them sincerely for their kind expressions of sympathy.
