I have hitherto invariably before announcing engagements made such inquiries as could leave no reasonable doubt about the correctness of the announcement when made. But last week, through accepting as correct, without my usual precautionary inquiries, an announcement in a northern letter of the engagement of Miss Campbell and Mr Harris, I find I have caused needless annoyance, as I am informed on the best authority that no such engagement has been made. I can only express my regret, and make up my mind to adhere in future to the rule which has served me so well hitherto.
