CANTERBURY.
The report of the truant officer of the North Canterbury Education Board shows that during the past year 202 parents or guardians had been vaniinoned lor the irregular attendance of their children, as against 284 for 1898. In 143 cases fines were inflicted, amounting in all to £15 4s,
Mr Joshua Page, a well-known breeder and judge of stock, died in Christchurch on the 24th.
Fifty intending members signed their names' on Thursday to a petition for the formation of a Scottish Rifle Corps here. Captain G. Harper, who left the corps in 1887, has been again elected captain of the Christ's College Rifles.
At a special meeting of the A. and P. Association a petition to Parliament was adopted praying that a bill be passed to put a stop to bogus bills at auction sales of land and stock. Copies of the petition are to be sent to kindred associations.
