THE DIRECT STEAMERS.

The Rangatira sailed from London on Janliary 10 for Port Chalmers and Lyttelton. The Matatua (from Port Chalmers, December 30) left Monte Video on Thursday morning with her meat in good condition. , LYTTELTON, January 26.— Sailed : Gairloch, for London, via Las Palmas. WELLINGTON, January 27.— Sailed : J3tar of Victoria, for London. January 28: jSailed : Paparoa, for London, via Rio. r WELLINGTON, January 29.— Arrived: ■Ruahine, from London, via Hobart. She brings 62 passengers. — The Maori sailed from Plymouth on January 22 for Wellington and liyttelton. ADELAIDE, January 29.— Arrived : Perthshire, from London. , SYDNEY, January 26.— Sailed : Indralema, Jor Auckland. ' LONDON, January 23.— Arrived: WakaWi, from New Zealand.

HOBART, January 24.— The Ruahine arrived during the night. She sailed at 6 y clock to-night for New Zealand.

THE TYSER LINE,

The Tyser line steamer Fernfield sailed from Kew York on the 24th inst. for Melbourne, Sydney, and New Zealand ports, a full ship.

THE WAIKARE'S EXCURSION.

WELLINGTON, January 25.— The v WaiIcare's trip was very successful, although a iair share of rain was met with, especially in Milford Sound. The Waikare was the first 'of the Union Company's fleet to visit Hall's *Arm and Crooked Arm. Black swans were jseen there in abundance, and the scenery is described as magnificent.

The s.'s. Mararoa steamed down to Port Chalmers on the 23rd, and left in the afternoon for Sydney, via Auckland.

The s.s. Mararoa left the Bowen pier, Port Chalmers, on the 23rd with passengers and cargo for Sydney, via the East Coast ports.

The s.s. Virawa. from Calcutta, via East Coast ports, arrived on the night of the 23rd, and was berthed at the tongue wharf. The Virawa is one of the cargo tramp type, with a gross tonnage of 3338 tons, and 2158 net.

The s.s. Tarawera, from Melbourne, via Hobart and the Bluff, arrived at the tongue tvharf at 7.10 a.m. on the 24th.

The steamer Claverdon, from Bombay, via, Hobart. passed the heads on the 24th, bound north, after receiving orders to proceed to Oamaru, at which port she loads for the Cape under charter to the Imperial Government.

The s.s. Tarawera steamed down to Port Chalmers on Thursday morning, and left in the afternoon for Sydney, via Wellington. ■ Dunedin wharves had a very busy appearance on Thursday, nearly all the berthage acmodation being occupied by the following vessels: — Sailing vessels — Wellington, Kinclune, Akaroa", Nor' -Wester, Onyx, Isabella Anderson, Croydpn Lass, Lily, Ocean Ranger (laid up). Steamers — Virawa, Tarawera, Te Anau, Pukaki. Upolu, and Riniu (laid up) — A total of 10,402 tons.

The s.s. ."Westralia, from Sydney, via Auckland, arrived at the cross wharf at 1 p.m. on Sunday. She left Sydney on the 19th Bn=t.

The s.s. Papanui up to Saturday afternoon had put out over 2700 tons of her Dunedin cargo, and took in a quantity of butter. She commenced taking in frozen meat on Mondoy.

The British India Company's s.s. Virawa steamed down to Port Chalmers on Saturday afternoon, and after taking in a supply of coal left for Newcastle, via the Bluff.

The British steamer Ping Sue/y, says an exchange, has been chartered to load at Philadelphia 40,000 quarters of grain for Rotterdam. This is believed to be the largest cargo of its kind ever carried by a single vessel. The Ping Suey is 6500 tons gross, 4150 tons net, and can carry 9000 tons dead weight. She will be the heaviest draught ever to ascend the Delaware in it=> annals, even surpassing that of the Brazilla, which loaded at Philadelphia. She carries a crew of 74 men.

The Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company's ship Nelson, Captain Perriam, from Liverpool for this port, via Wellington, passed the heads on Monday "All well." The s.s. Papanui took in over 1000 quartei's of frozen beef at the George street pier on Monday. The s.s. Talune left at 2.30 p.m. on Monday for Melbourne, via the Bluff and Hobart. The s.s. Tarawera arrived at the Bowen pier at 6 a.m. on Monday. The Tarawera was put out of commission on Monday. Messrs Huddart, Parker, and Co., Pty., Limited, contemplate making additions to their already fine fleet of intercolonial steamers. The superintendent engineer of the company and one of the directors have left for England, with, it is understood, the object of securing two new steamers. One of these will be similar in design to the Zealandia, to be used in the passenger trade, and the other will be of the cargo tyP e > principally for the coal trade. In connection with Messrs Huddart, Pai-ker, and Co.'s line, it is stated that the Moura will shortly be withdrawn from the Hobart trade, and the Tambo will resume her running on that^ line.
