MINING.

The contractor, Mr'M'Kechnie, has made a start at coitstruciu.g tnd pontoons lor the daliway House Company's dredge. A site for tiie pontoons oi the Cair.initur Company's dredge is being excavated ou the Old Dunstan Company's claim. None of the dredge material hds &o far arrived on the giouncl. It is nearly time that the directors ot tlio Monte Cliristo Company made a move m ihe direction oi securing a dredge for their valuable property. ■ I see the Pioneer Dredging Company have reapphed for thoir claim. 'J his company is also slow in procuring a, dudsc. though the property is undoubtedly a va'u.ib'e one. It is lumotu-ed that the Vincent clicdge will soon be shifted up stream from the present site of operations. Boring operations have been suspended on the West Matau Company's claim pending the amval of a set of lods from Dunedin, the county rods beirg found unfitted for the work. My own peisonal opinion is that no bet of rods piocurabie in Dunedin could cope with the woik. 1 may bo wrong, but I hold to that ooiniou till I see cause to altar it. I have

known tests made by rods obtained at Dundin, and I was convinced that such rods were intended for boring through clay deposit rather than through gravel. However, lam still open to conviction in the matter.

At last Wednesday's sitting of the Vincent County Council, Mr Robert Gilkison, on behalf of the Earnscleugh No. 3 Dredging and Electric Supply Company, made application for permission to erect an electric wire over the public roads at Earnscleugh Flat. The council recoji mended the application to the Governor.
