THE NEW ZEALAND POST OFFICE DIRECTORY.

Wise's New Zealand Post Office Directory for 1900 has now been distributed to the subscribers. Necessarily an extremely bulky work — for_ it contains separate alphabetical directories .for >jevery city, borough, township, and distriot- in • the- colony,- a • trade directory, and omcial'directories.-rn addition to an alphabetical directory " 'for ' tlie whole colony, — it seems to have been" compiled with the utmost care, and to be admirably reliable. The troiible and expense incidental' to" the' preparation of such a work must T^e "enormous. "We have said that it includes "separate' alphabetical directories for "the "Various" " centres of population in the colony ; but in respect of the principal centres — the four large cities and such places as Invercargill, Oamaru, Timaru, Nel°on, Wan- ] ganui — the names of the residents are given under the headings of the different streets to j which they belong. A person wishing to find i the address of a householder in any one of 1 these towns, therefore, has only to turn up the name in the complete alphabetical list for : the colony and then refer to the directory for • that town, and he will ba enabled to locate pracI tically the exact spot where the person of whom he is in quest lives. Moreover, in a further division of the work the names of traders and members of professions are contained under separate headings, and a useful list of nianu- < factiirers of principal goods for export to New j Zealand is also given. The official, medical, ecclesiastical, legal, and commercial directories I are so carefully compiled that they will stand the test of the closest investigation, and the _ information that is contained in them is sur- * prisingly full and up to date. The work is altogether one of extreme vslue. To business people it can hardly be other than indispensable. As has previously been- -stated, it was printed by the Otago Daily Times and Witness Newspapers Company, and it is the heaviest printing Vvork that is known to have been undertaken by any office in the colony. The prepaiation of it consumed an enormous amount of time, but it is announced that Messrs Wise and Co. will hereafter be in a position to issue their directory annually instead of, as previously, in every second year. A testimonial to the Hon. Major Steward is in cours»of preparation by the electors of i Waitaki in recognition of the services rendered by him as their member during the 18 years ho has represented them in Parliament. — Timaru Herald. Tiißsicura, for coughs and colds; no house should be without it. — Wholesale agents, '. Kempthorne, Frosser ; P. Hayman and Co.
