Transvaal Belief Loud. TO THE EDITOR.
Sir, — There is a lot of quarrelling goirg on here ju^t now over the temi "Transvaal Ttehef Furd. ' We want your opinion on the matter 'Che Qiisscioii is — "Is the heading ' Transvaal Uelief Fund ' quite coirect literally ;t the money gathered under that heading is supposed to go to the main, patriotic .Relief Fund m London .' Now, "htei-iUy" means lollowmg the letter or exact wouls 'Jhis is Ihe a-i^wer one good educationalist has given me on the subject — "The teun Transvaal "Relief Fur.d ' means the relief of a. I those belonging to the Transvaal buffering horn any di=A=ter that has overcome them. Thereicre ''1 i\in!=\aa' 11 she' Fund' means, sucorchi.jr io thn leltoi. innr>o- collected m oidei to aid thp inhabitants of the Transvaal (who ?re chiefly sioei «), the same as the Queensland liehef i'uiid was for the Queens-
landers, and the Indian Relief Fund was for the relief of ihe inhabitants of Jndia, etc." Is not Patriotic Relief Fund, or War Relief Fund, much more explicit and suitable than "Transvaal Relief Fund," which would lead a stranger or foreigner to understand that we are collecting money to aid the Transvaallers instead oi the Britons. Will you kindly give your opinion o.i the matter, which will aid us patriots gieatly to win a battle oi -woids against those wcoden-headed, contrary Boer sympathisers of this quarter. — I am, etc., BEATRICE TANNER. Southland, January 15. [The heading is purposely made comprehensive. Of course it is not literally correct. If it were we should say it meant the rehei of the Transvaal as a State, which is, of course, just the opposite of what is intended, as it is really the lehef of the misguided State's victims which is aimed at. The heading is, however, of no co lsequence whatever, as eveiyone knows what the fund is intended for. — Ed.] ' At Winton close on £50 was collected at a patriotic meeting. Air T. M.
