EWEBURN.

January 14. — The weather lias been very changeable and unseasonable in this locality lately — wind and rain for the most part piedominating. Several veiy warzn days have been experienced, the thermometer registering sometimes as much as 84deg in the shade, and the nights have been correspondingly warm. Latterly two or three of the mornings have been fine, warm, and calm, while the afternoons have been marked by the frequent passing- of snow and rain showers, with accompanying thunder, considerable deposits of the first commodity being left on the ranges. During similar cold snaps the nights have been quite chilly, as many as four 01 five degrees of frost being registered. Though not very pleasant on account of such sudden changes, it has been very good growing weather, the results of the irequent rains being, everywhere evidenced in the crops. ' Transvaal Relief Fund. — Several entertainments are being got up here and in surrounding districts with the view of raising subscriptions for the fund. Concerts will be held at Ginimerburn and Waipiata during the coming week, and also shortly at-ITaseby, the pioceeds all to go towards the patriotic fund. • Railway Extension. — The work of extendine bhe Otago Central line is being pushed forward just now with all possible haste. The rails are now laid about, rivp uules beyono. the piesent terminus, and it is expected the line will be opened up as far as Wedderburn by about April. Races. — On the 17th March races and athletic Bports will be held at Ranfurly. v Sickness. — Influenza has been very prevalent in this locality of late, numbers of residents being laid up with it.
