SYDNEY, January 12. At the wool sales there is good competition, but prices are irregular and declining ; greasy merino are a halfpenny and inferior sorts one penny lower than at vie preChristmas sales. The total number of bales available, including old stocks, is 141,000." Messrs Dalgety and Co. (Limited) report having received the following cablegram from their London offico yeoterday: — "The Antwerp wool sales as compared with the average rates of last Antwerp wool sales closed with prices higher by 10 to 15 per cent. There was competition for good fine wools, and the present London inices were realised in merinos, halfbred, and fine crossbreds. Agency Company report having held their second sale of the season at the Agricultural Hall yesterday, when some 12,000 bales of wool were submitted. On the whole the wools from the south were in better condition than last year, and a very representative quantity of the v/ools grown south was submitted, notwithstanding that- a good quantity has yet to come forwaid for future disposal. From Otago Central the wool is much better than it has been for many years, owing to the more favourable season last year (back end), as also the abundance of feed ruling at present. The attendance was good, all the local mills being represented, as well as the many fellmongeiies in the district, added to the many weil-knowa buyers who operate for tho English and foreign markets. The chief feature wa3 the animated competition for merinos, halfbreds, and fine crossbreds, all of which sold at quite up to present London values. Messrs A. Moritzson and Co. report having held their second wool sale of tho season in the Agricultural Hall on Friday. There was a very large attendance of buyers, and competition was keen for all descriptions of fine wools. Coarse wools, however, unless very light and clean, were not in great demand, and for these prices were rather lower than at the last sale. Messr3 Donald Reid and Co. report as follows: — We held our second wool sale of the season's series at the Agricultural Hall, Dunedin, on Friday, the 12th day of January, 1900, when we submitted a catalogue of 1378 bales of Ronmey, Leicester, crossbred, and merino wools, chiefly clips from small grazing runs and agricultural farmers' lots. The bulk of the wools we catalogued were well grown, clean, and sound in staple, although unfortunately many of the clips were rather strong and too coarse to meet the requirements of manufacturers, who have to consider prevailingfashions and to buy accordingly. There was a large attendance of buyers, English, foreign, and colonial manufacturers, amd the local, Mosgiel, Roslyn, Oamaru, Kaiapoi, and Bruce factories were well repiesented, and all assisting materially in the success of the sales. There was very brisk and spirited bidding for all fine crossbred, halfbred, and merino wools, and all meeting these descriptions well maintained and in. some cases established an advanoe on the satisfactory prices realised at the opening sales. Eleven thousand one lvundred and one bales were cptalogxied by the various selling brokers for yesterday's sale. TJie coarser. .classes oijwools w.ere jwt mi amah
request, and all this class again met a dragging sale, and with little, if any, improvement on the prices realised at the first sales. There was a very large attendance of wool-growers and others interested in the proceedings, and on the whole producers appeared to be satisfied with the prices realised. Of the 1378 bales submitted by us, 1197 were sold at auction, 151 bales were pas3ed, bidding not ..reaching owner's reserves, and- in some cases not reaching valuation, and 30 bales catalogued did nofc arrive in time to be valued before the sale. The Otago Farmers' Co-operative Association report having held their second sale of the season on Friday, 12th January, at 2 o'clock. Theio was a very large gathering of buyers from all quarters, and also a big attendance of wool-growei-s. For the day's sale something over 11,000 bales were offered, including some of the choice well-known brands. For the finer sorts (merino and -showy halfbred) there was splendid competition, and prices for these sorts were slightly higher than at last sales. Crossbred, too, if bright and in good condition, were well competed for, and certainly showed an improvement. Earthy, wasty lots of every description were rather neglected, and sold at about similar prices to those ruling at last sale. We catalogued 831 bales, and. cleared almost every line under spirited competition — the exception being slipe wools, which were unsaleable except at low values. The following may be taken as to-day's ruling values: —

3/Tessrs Dalgety and Co. (Limited), Dunedin, report as follows : — The second series of the Dunedin wool sales for the season were held on Friday, the total offerings of the nine "brokers aggregating 11,101 bales, as compared ■with 9440 bales for the corresponding sale last year. Our catalogue, which was a repre&en■fcative one, comprised 2325 bales, of which ■we sold 1937, which, with 284 bales sold privately since our last sale, makes a total of 2221 bales sold. There was a large attendance ■of Home,- Continental, and local buyers, and Spirited competition for all merinos and fine halfbreds, at equal to the highest rates of the season. Medium and coarse crossbreds were, if anything, in buyers' favour, but all low sorts and oddments sold at relatively high rates. We received a cable from our London house yesfterday to the effect that the Antwerp wool sales showed a rise of from 10 per 'cent, to 15 per ■cent. on. the previoxis Antwerp sales. This cable, no doubt, had a beneficial effect on the market here, and we consider that prices for »11 fleece are fully up to London parity, while pieces, bellies, and locks are relatively dearer 3iere than in London. Our next sale will be lield on 2nd February, when we shall biing forward an attractive catalogue. The following
were the ruling values at our sale on Friday, j Merino — superior, to 15Jd ; good, 12^d to 14d ; , medium, lid to 12^1; inferior, 9£d to 10£ d. Messrs Stronach Bros, and Morris report having held their second wool sale of the season on Friday at the Agricultural Hall, when there was a very large number of both buyers and owners present. The result was a most satisfactory sale for all descriptions, and prices all round were higher than at the opening sale of the season, so much so that we must warmly congratulate the various vendors who had the good fortune to offer their clips by auction on Friday. It was anticipated that the broken weather in the country up till the New Year would make the sale a small one, but this v/'as not so, as during the few days preceding the sale wool literally poured into Dunedin, and the various catalogues totalled over 11,000 bales. Our catalogue contained nothing very choice, the highest prices being the following:— Merino— MS, 13|d; SH over B, 13 li. Halfbred— MT, 13d; ET, 12Jd; TD, 12Jd- MS, 12d; Cora Linn, 12d. Quarterbred — JD, 13id; SH over B, 13d; Kaitoa, 12Ad. Crossbred— MT, lOJd; SH over B, lOJd ; DRJ, 10^d. Ronmey hoggets — Mainholm, Q%. Pieces— Cora Linn, lOd; MS, 9£d; Kaitoa, 9£d. We offered by auction 769 bales, and in conjunction with Dalgety and Co. (Limited) 288, a total of 1084 bales. Messrs Wright, Stephenson, and Co. report: — The second sale of the season was held on Friday, when 11,100 bales were catalogued by the nine Dunedin brokers. Our catalogue comprised 25 per cent, of the quantity offered, with 2909 bales, the whole of which, with the exception of some twc*faales scoured, was greasy, and included some of the finest clips grown in Otago, notably among which were the following: — Messrs G-. and J. S. Nichol (Clarks), N over Abbotsford; Mr John Reid {Oamaru), Balruddery over Arrow through B reversed R conjoined; Messrs W. and IT. Reid (Outram), Horsehoof; Messrs Murray, Roberts, and Co., Lochindorb; Mr D. Ross (Palnierston), DR; Mr F. F. Neill (Waikouaiti), FN over Tumai; Mr Alex. Murdoch (Kyeburn), TJ ; Mr P. A. Watt (Kaihiku), JW ; Mr J. A. Johnston (Waikaka), AJ; Messrs Begg Bros. (Hillend), BB over Anchor; Mr James Robertson (Lawrence), PR over L; Mr James Chapman (Dunback), JC over Stoneburn; Mr T. F. Robertson (Heriot), Spylaw, Mr C. J. Hurst (Waimate), CJH over Brooklands. It gives us much pleasure, and we are sure it will delight the pastoralists of Otago and Southland, more especially those whose flocks are run upon the mountainous districts, to learn of the results of Friday's sale. The owners of merino and halfbred flocks had a rare innings for their products, and although we have been in the trade for over 30 years, we have never known such prices to be paid as were current at our sale in the Agricultural Hall last evening. Buyers vied with each other in their anxiety to secure the finebred wool, and the result of the sale of these classes was a record for the colony in prices. For example, for Messrs G. and J. S. Nichol's clip, from their Abbotsford Station, we obtained 16d per lb for merinos and 14Jd for the halfbreds. A number of other well-known clips of superior merinoa realised from 14 Jd to 15Jd, and choice halfbreds and quarterbreds fetched from 12?td to lSd ; superior first merino pieces fetched 12d to 13Jd. In contrast to this state of things, however, coarse crossbred wools were at a discount, and although buyers were prepared to take all on offer, it was only at a reduction of Jd to 2d in the rates ruling at the opening series of the season. This change in the market was not unexpected, for both the Timaru and Invercargill sales showed a similar change in rates, although the improvement in finer wools was not so marked. All pieces and locks in particular attracted special attention at extreme
prices, and were fiom to Sd higher. There appears to be a general feeling of disappointment by the glowers of the. coarser qualities that the prices current are moie or less unsatisfactory, but they must bear in mind that these classes have not participated m the advance to anything like the same extent as the finer grades and merinos, but those who have closely followed the market will recollect that there has been a gradual and continuous advance on the finer wools since May, and it was only at the November series that crossbreds showed any improvement, and then oniy to the extent of about 17V per cent., so that prices ruling here this season for these classes, although apparently - low, are quite on a parity with those ruling m Loudon. The following are, yesterday's prices, for the different descriptions: — Merinos — Super 16d to 14Jd, good 131 dto 12d, medium 1] Id to lOJd, inferior lOd toOd; halfbreds — Superior 14U1 to' 12d good HJd to lOJd, medium 9Jd to S^d ~ inferior 8d to 7d; crossbreds — Super 10\d to Oid, good 9d to B\d; three-quarterbied longwools— Super 8d to 7d, good 7d to GJd, medium 6d to 55a, inferior 5Jd to 4£d: pieces and bellies— Super ]1M to Bd, good 7Jd to 6Jd, medium Cd to sjd inferior 5d to 4d; locks— Super 5d to 4id, good 4d to 3Jd, medium 3d to 2id, inferior 2d to Id. The Farmers' Agency Company report having held their second sale on Friday, when they offered a catalogue of 826 bales, which included some very choice parcels, notably the clips of Messrs Robert Robinson, sen. (Berwick), A. C. Begg (Cairn and Willowburn), John Howat (Tapanui), D. Williamson (Clinton), John Sutherland (Waitahuna), R. Chalmers (Upper Owaka), Jno. Boyle (Clinton). There was spirited competition for all the finer kinds of wool, the prices, compared with previous sales. being more than maintained. Super to good halfbred sold up to 13|d. Owing to the late hour at which the sales were completed, it was impossible to publish a detailed list of prices realised, which will appear in Monday's issue.
Messrs Maclean and Co. report having held their second sale- of the season on Friday, when there was a very large attendance of the trade generally. Bidding was a trifle slower than usual, unless where the fine classes of wool were concerned, when it became very lively. Taken all through, pales must be considered highly satisfactory, especially for all fine wools, and in the case of the coarser qualities, although in some instances more was expected, still the rates realised show an advance on last year's of l\d. to 2d, and this must be considered very good. Pieces and bellies elicited keen bidding and good prices in eveiy case. On a rough estimate the difference in prices from last year means something considerably over £50,000 to Otago on Friday's catalogues. Following are a few of our leading prices: — 3M over Owake, 12 bales crossbred ewe, wether and hogget 3d, 1 bellies and broken fleece 6Jd; — over & in heart, 1 merino paid halfbred ewe Hid, 6 halfbred ewe lOJd, sdo 10 Jd, 3 halfbred broken fleece 9d, 3 halfbred hogget Bd, 1 halfbred broken fleece and second pieces 53d, 5 crossbred (4 E, 1 W) Bd, 2 crossbred hogget 73(d, 1 halfbred and crossbred hogget 7, 1 Leicester rams and dingy 6|d, 4 halfbred first pieces 7Jd, 1 halfbred bellies 6Jd, 1 locks and second pieces 3f d ; TJ inverted over two bars over 1, 4 fine crossbred" ewe lOJd, 2 threc-quarterbred ewe B^l,l first pieces 7d ; HH, 5 halfbred 9%d, 1 bellies and pieces 6id; PI, 4 halfbred ewe BJd, 1 crossbred hogget BJd; A in heart, 9 crossbred ewe 12d, 5 crossbred hogget 10£ d, 2 first pieces Bd, 1 bellies 7d, 1 second pieces 3^d ; H2, 6 halfbred ewe A HJd, 8 halfbred wether A 10]. d, 2 halfbred hogget A 9d, 5 three-quarterbred ewe A.
