Tunnels all the Way.
Nowhere is electricity being more extensively employed than in mines of all sorts, wherein not only are the "galleries" and shafts so lighted, but pumps, drills, and locomotives are driven by the same power. The peculiar-looking machine illustrated 13 a fair sample of a mine electric locomotive, controlled by one man, and gathering its mo-
tiye power from the rod charged with electricity that runs along the roof of the tunnel shown, in the same way as we find adopted in not a few electric tramways in the open. It will be noticed that the engineer wears a special padded cap — which is to protect • his head from bumps against the rough walls.
