SUDDEN DEATH.

I A very sudden death occurred. in Duncan street early on Monday morning. "Mr James M. Mackintosh, who has- for very many years been in the Customs department, was found by his daughter lying dead in a summer house. It appears that about 6.15 a.m. deceased called his daughter, who was in bed, to get up. She replied " All right," and then heard him go outside. About a quarter of an hour later Miss Mackintosh went out into the garden to pull fruit. On passing thesummer house she saw her father lying on the floor. On going in she found that he was dead. Dr Colquhoun and Dr Martin were summoned, but as death had supervened before their arrival they could do nothing. Deceased had suffered severely from rheumatism for some years, but. as far as could, be ascertained, had not been receiving medical attendances. Heart disease is presumed to have been the cause of death. Deceased, who was an old' resident of Dunedin, was employed by the Provincial Government to blasl the cutting of Bell Hill, he being one of the few men available at the time who was thoroughly: conversant with blasting operations. Subsequently he weiit to Blue Spur to supervise similar, work, and afterwards returned to Dunedin. He entered, the service of the Customs department in 1863, and at the time of his death he occupied the position of chief landing waiter. He was about 60 years of age. At -a meeting of the North Otago A., and P. Association on the 10th, it was decided to request the Government to suspend the co-operative works throughout the colony during harvest time owing to the expected scarcity of harvesters.
