Notes from Lyell.

JCFbom Ovr Own Cobbespondent.j LYELL, January 12.

The Mine Manager of the Alpine mine reports as follows: — "The No. 7 level has been redriven irr the foot wall for a total distance of 52ft: An irregular body of stone, varying from 18in to 2ft 6in. wide, and the whole, of fair quality, has been carried along. Stoping is being continued on the branch reef in No. 10 level. The width of stone is from 2ft to 4ft, and runs into the footwall for a distance of 16ft. Work is also progressing .in the stopes at the back of the north extension of No. 11 level, the reef being from 2£t to 3ft wide. A small quantity of stone is also being won above the' south extension of No. 11 from a reef varying from 2ft to 4ft in width. The crosscut in the- north end" of the stope obove the intermediates between Nos. 10 and 11 has been put in for a Mrther distance of 7ft, making a total ' length of 27ft. The hanging wall country | being wet the crosscut was discontinued, and sc start made to drive a crosscut in the extreme ' south end of the intermediate. The distance made so far is 12ft, and the country is regular and. of a favourable nature. The winze in the north end of No. 11 level is now down for a total depth of gift. At the bottom there is a large mass of broken quartz running in irregular directions, but the defined reef has not yet come in. The quantity of stone- sent to the battery is 160 toaa.'

DREDGING AT WAIKAKA. '. TO THE EDITOR. | Sh, — In your issue of the 11th inst. " A Wai- ; kaka Farmer ' hr.s a long effusion re the sludge ' channel It is hard to understand the object , the writer has, in view in attempting to put the i saddle on the wrong horse's back by saying that ' a gentleman in Gore had influenced the farmers to go against their own interests. Such is nol the case, as xSe first thing the diggers did was to ask the Government to resume Mr John Turnbull's land, as it was the best golcl-bear-ing land in the district. The Government ap-' pointed Mr Hawkins, the magistrate, to hold a court of inquiry. After hearing both sides, the magistrate said, in his report, that the evidence on the gold-bearing x^roperties of Ihe ground was visionary, therefore he could not recommend the Government to resume the land. Recent developments have disclosed the vision at the dredging boxes. In conclusion, I would advise " Farmer " to give up scheming and stick to farming, and not throw a certainty away for an uncertainty; also, to give his support to that gentleman in Gore who has been the means of advertising the products of Waikaka Valley in the commercial world as second to none. — I am, etc., i A VICTIM. i January 15. THE GIBBSTON DREDGING COMPANY'S | CLAIM. TO THE EDITOB. I Sir, — In conjunction with a friend of mine, '■ who was strongly advised to buy shares in this 1 claim, we purchased shares at 3s 6d premium. J\idge of our surprise when we found out a laTge shareholder, and a prominent " barracker" for this company, was the seller. 'My friend and myself are investors, not speculators ; we- have 50 shares between us. During New Year I visited the Kawarau River, and saw the claim. It looks all right, but I ana not an expert. Now the public should know this fact. This claim was bored, and at 60ft or 70ft no bottom was obtained, and no wash (gold-bearing) was passed through. At the upper end the depth was not nearly so deep. A rumour r.a.° been spread about that re-boring has proved the claim a good one. I doubt very much tne " re-boring " business. Will the directors inform the shareholders the results of the first boring, and at once? Let us know if there is any truth in the rumour of re-boring. We have j a right to know, and if the information is withheld several shareholders will take such steps as we can to get at the truth. — I am, etc., j Ca-stie street, Dunedin. Peter Ross. I [The secretary of the company informs us that it is quite true that a certain amount of boring has taken place, but the directors have • not finally decided as to future operations, j pending the return and report of one of the directors who is visiting the claim. When his report is received full information will be given the shareholders.— Ed. O.D.T.]DREDGING COMPANIES. TO THE EDITOR. Sib, — A gentleman in this morning's issue objects to what he is pleased to assume is a loading of 2000 shares in dredging companies. Well, I take an entirely different view of the matter. If a company is a good, one 2000 shares is not one whit too much to ask for a progexty which .will yield for each JIOO invested anything from 25 to 150 or even more per cent. In fact I would -feeF disposed to look with suspicion on any property -which solicited less. I-n this world it is impossible to get some-thing-for nothing, and if the public can get handsome interest for their outlay at a minimum of risk — and these factors rule the djestiny of any good, dredging claim, — I am quite certain they will be quite satisfied. — I am, etc., Habtley and Riley.
