ST. BATHANS.
December 25. — The festive season has again come round, and by what we have experienced, _ the bulk of the community are enjoying it, I may add, under the present oppressive circumstances. There would have been no bounds to our joy could we only have heard of the Telief of General White. We have had no war news here since last Friday, and the anxiety for our troops in our little town is oppressive to a very marked degree. I am highly pleased to state that our local-born young men are offering their services for the Transvaal, and should, they be accepted, I have no hesitation in saying many more will follow in the course of their chums. Be it said, we have a few here who are in sympathy with the Boers, but in 'the future their expressions will be with bated breath, as some of them have received a challenge to " put up their hands " in defence of the Boer, whilst others have had their beauty spoiled for the holidays. I have stated the young men are volunteering foi the front. It may also be stated' that the " old 'uns " are not idle. Stepß are being taken to raise money for the widows' and orphans' fund, and a. public meeting will be held during tho week to inaugurate the movement.
Musical. — Our brass band turned out in force on Saturday and Sunday evenings, playing secular and sacred music respectively. The music was a great treat, being played with great taste, and approaching, accuracy. The pieces of music I appreciated to the greatest degree were " The Death of Nelson " and " Abide with me," both pieces being well rendered, and the fact that the parts were rendered so well bespeaks studious practice.
Amusements. — The wather has been very unsettled of late, but present appearances give hopes of good weather for our annual race meet-
ing and other outdoor amusements, which taft* place to-morrow. — The ladies are working ardently to give the children a treat onjtfew Year's Day. May their efforts meet with tho success they deserve! '
